Got the good news I will be elk hunting this year

I drew unit 17 second muzzlerloader season in new mexico. Not a super easy hunt but this unit has giant bulls and is a great unit to glass them up in. I am pump up as can be right now. Will not be all the bulging I love to hear but so much fun any way.

Got even better news that my friend in new mexico drew the same tag so we will be hunting again after a few years off.

Both are in 23 where I normally hunt. Hard unit to hunt but I am pretty successful there.

I used to have a cabin in cloudcroft. It was nice place to make a quick get away to. My son killed his first elk in 34 when he was 10, it was something I waited my whole life for. It was a cow, but it might as well been a 400 bull the way he acted. He retold me the story all the way home. It was a great moment in life!

Our cabin is up Hay canyon, it's about 45-50 min up over Rio Penasco to cloudcroft. I'm taking my 2 kids turkey hunting next weekend up there! Can't wait!

G skinner one day I hope to draw a 17 tag for archery to as that is a dream hunt with a bow.

I have not hunt 34 yet but it has a bunch of elk in it that I know. I normally do unit 13 or 10 first 17 tag after trying before but for the harder to draw dates.

Bullthrower we talk about my son first elk a bunch so I know right what you mean. new mexico is a very special to me and my son as we have more day hunting in that state because of the awesome youth seasons they have then we have in are home state.

Anyone with a hunter under 18 should look at new mexico for hunting chances for there kids hard to beat and plenty of public to use all over the state.

I agree Bill, I wish other states would focus on youth hunting like NM does. I miss living out there, I could be in the mountains in a couple hours and learned to really love the high desert. Hard to get used to Texas with the lack of public land, I resort to the water here to get away from people, definately not the same.

If I thought I could make a living in new mexico I would buy a place and move there in no time. Just cant move some place because of good hunting. I don't think I can anyway. LOL One day who knows maybe just some land with a cabin to go to for a few month.
