Ruger No 1 375 H&H to 404 Jeffery

I had already searched their site, and looked at all the metallic sights...saw nothing called a Dorleac sight.

Did I miss it?
Tarbe,

My error.

With my apologies I should have typed "Recknagel Classic Front Sight" and not Dorleac because the Mauser that I had examined from Dorleac, evidently had a custom front sight, probably made from bar-stock as per a specific customer's request.

(That Dorleac was a beauty though, pretty much the same as the old Westley Richards "backwards" looking front sight, with flip over hood/ large white bead, etc.)

The Recknagel Classic is a very fine sight though (sold through NECG) and not to be confused with the "Recknagel Masterpiece Banded Front Sight" which although a very well made item, is nonetheless very "Ruger / Griffin & Howe looking" and not so much "British Express Rifle looking" in shape and profile.

On the other hand, the Recknagel "Classic" would look right at home on the business end of any finest Holland & Holland made repeater.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

Tarbe........................good luck with the project. I have gone thru a lot of Ruger No 1's, but never in one of the 40 calibers. FWIW, even at 2000fps, a ponderous 400 grainer covers the distance from the 50 yard target on to the 100 yard target in about 0.08 seconds time of flight. This allows for little drop, and consequently, almost no difference in the notch depth of a 50 yard standing and a 100 yarder. The point............think carefully about the ranges on the mostly decorative leaf sights................50/100/150................I have these on a 45-70 and find them redundant. ..................and a scope is a quick on/off for the No. 1...........regards..........................FWB

Points taken!

I have been thinking lately that my initial rear sight thoughts had a lot more to do with style than necessity!

If I go with a scope mount, I think a single leaf ought to be sufficient?

tarbe i have never used any of the extra flip ups on my rifles only the main fixed one. maybe in the past when scopes were harder to get hold of and the different heights were calibrated correctly ok, but these days only the main one is sighted in by even the top rifle makers.....could be wrong but the time and effort to file the sights at 200 and 300 would not be worth the time and money, and i doubt anyone uses their irons much over 100yds.

Personally I would just go with either a regular adj rear sight (Williams, and the like), and a low to mid power scope with a set of Warne or Talley QD's. I have yet to use the flip leafs either. I tried them at the range but wasn't comfortable. I'm more comfortable with a scope or Red Dot style myself. All comes down to personal preference and matching optics to the area, or game being hunted.
Have fun with your project.

well i hope the .404 or other cal rifle of your dreams doesnt show up too soon then!!! ;):E Big Grin:

That would be bad. I need to put my blinders on!

Seems like everyone is doing 404 projects! The 404J is going mainstream here on AH! Deservedly so...it is a dandy of a cartridge.

Unfortunately, my project is dead.

I felt like I was getting the run-around from the 'smith and I figured if I could not get timely answers to questions on the front-end, what would happen once he has my rifle and money?

They with the delay, I was able to have my 15th change of heart on the project....so it is not going to happen with the No 1. In fact, the rifle is sold and gone!

Maybe one day - but for now I will just drool over everyone else's 404J rifles!

That sucks Tim! The 404 is a great round and I thought that I was going to get one for sure. Now I may just step it up to the 458 Lott.

Bummer. Hate to hear that tarbe.

Keep your eyes open. Something will pop up in time.:)

Have you considered looking for an inexpensive 300RUM and doing a rebarrel?

Like my old dad used to say, "oh well, it was a good idea while you had it!" :D

Tarbe, always trust your instincts, things will work out.(y)

Tim very sorry to hear this but as enysse says, gotta go with what feels right at the time.
