In matters of rifles, I love a classic action, rust blued, on a fine piece of walnut. I have no affinity for stainless steel, do not like the look and feel of laminated or synthetic stocks, and find abhorrent the pad/spacers design of the Steyr and Ruger iterations of the Scout rifle...

Yet, ten days ago a friend of mine showed up on a plains game hunt with a Ruger Scout, and I got to handle it, carry it, shoot it, and hunt with it for the week-end.

Oh my. What an ugly duckling. And what a lovely rifle...!

Short (European version, 18" barrel without flash hider), light, handy, very effective sights, accurate, in a do-it-all medium caliber, this thing grew on me to the point that now I have to have one. When it's not a .458 job, it's a .308 job, and this one is (almost, we'll come to that) perfect.

The sights are simple and well made, with protective "ears" both front and rear. The materials are such that you don't worry about rain, dust, a few scratches, bumps on the ground or in the rear of the pick-up. A real tool of a rifle, made to take anything you can throw at it.

Two things I didn't like: the Picatinny rail (all these corners and angles are very uncomfortable to handle), and the 10-rounds drop magazine.

The rail can be unscrewed and removed, easy fix. If I want to install a scope, the standard Ruger rings fit the receiver.

The magazine is bulky, impedes comfortable handling of the rifle, is in the way when you want to shoot prone or taking support from a tree, and is a pain in the backside to reload. Good for would-be Scout Rangers or plinking sessions at the range, quite useless in real-life outdoors day-to-day work.

Searching the Net, I found out two things: one, many people dislike that bulky magazine, and much prefer the Ruger 3-rounds polymer magazine, which sits almost flush with the stock. Two, apparently it's easy to substitute the bottom metal with a Hawkeye bottom and magazine box, and you get a 4-rounds down, sleek rifle. I'd have to check if the feed rails in the action do work with that solution, but if they do, happy days!

My advice? If you see one of these little Scout carbines, do not pick it up... You may end up taking one back home!

how does the mag get in the way when you are shooting prone or taking support from a tree? when shooting AR or other similar types of rifle prone with 30rnd mags i dont find them getting in the way and they are a lot longer.....i have only had a look at them at sci and didnt find the rail a problem, but as you say they are nice little rifle, and i would be tempted if one showed up in a certain dealers shop in lusaka. :)

I thought they were overpriced, other than that they are handy.

Good post, thanks for sharing it.
Likewise, I would issue the same warning that Kano posted about the Scout, except regarding the CZ 550 MS model bolt action carbine (20" barrel, full length stock).
Don't try one or like the Ruger Scout, you likely will want one.
Mine is in 6.5x55 but they are available up to and including 9.3x62.

I have a Springfield Armory M1A that I am thinking about trading in on a Ruger Scout. They are nice little rifles!

I really like the Ruger rifles.
The same goes for the ones from Winchester.
The are by far my favorite brands when buying a new rifle these days.
I have a great love for the old Tikka rifles as well.
Like my M65 in 6.5x55.

I like the Ruger Scout with the green laminate stock, but the standard one with the black stock, not so much.

My girlfriend is soon buying the Ruger M77 Hawkeye Laminate Compact rifle in 308 Win.
A real gem of a gun in my opinion.

When I went shopping for a .308 for my plains game hunt I almost got the Ruger Scout. I went for a Tikka T3 instead. The two things that kept me from making it my first choice was the weight compared to the Tikka and I was a little worried about some of the military like features that might cause issues with some customs agent. Once the Safari os over and I have some spending money I plan on getting a Scout especially now that it's available with a synthetic stock.

I hate the magazine on my AR ... prone, taking support from a tree, carrying etc. .... and it goes downhill from there. Anybody interested in a .300 Blackout? :)!

I'm really thinking about one of these in .223 as a training rifle. Just something fun and cheap to plink with.

Question: Can you load from the top with the magazine inserted, or not?

I keep going back and forth between this and a CZ 452 in .22lr. Decisions! Decisions!!

I looked at the Ruger scout I allready have the M1A National Match in 308 so I decided on the New Ruger AR platform in 223. for a Carbine My Mannlicher Stocked CZ 550 does the trick

Welcome to the forum and thanks!

My issue with the lack of top feeding is for training only. I'm a big believer in reloading drills. My wife thinks I'm nuts for doing this in the bathroom with snap caps and my .375, but that's another story.... :A Me You:

Still like the rifle though and i will certainly meet the rest of my needs.

I understand that Ruger fitted the original .308 prototype Scout with an M14 pattern magazine but that **NOT**PERMITTED** staff advised against that decision, due to the availability of poor quality copies on the market and their potential effect upon the reputation of the new rifle.

I reaaally like them too and I want one. Problem is I already have 5 308's and dont really need another. I thought I may get one in 223 but I have serveral Ar's sooooo... I trying to figure out how to justify to my wife that I need one. I like the picatinny rail and mag though doesnt bother me in the least.

Ok Royal, I'll go for an and ask "why the bathroom?"

Are you multitasking or what?

Loading while you unload?

Practicing reloading drill number one or number two???

Sitting or standing?

Gosh Royal, you may have really hit on a piece of pure genius... Not only time savings but multiple positions and reloading under, uuhh, stress? Or is it under pressure? Well I suppose the pressure is being relieved?????

Simulated rain situation, practicing reloading in the shower?????

Damn I'm "crack"ing myself up here!

Trying to make it a truly dangerous situation?

Loading under pressure?

Being sure I can load properly in compromising situations?

Ensuring I don't $#%@ my pants when the time comes?

This could go on forever! LOL

The truth is that out bathroom is fairly large, has a big window, and is one of the only carpeted places in the house. If I had been slinging snap caps onto the hardwood floors, now that would have been dangerous!!!!!

Just be careful the neighbors don't call the cops on you if they see you in there loading and un-loading your gun!

I don't know about you but game always shows up when I am going to the bathroom. Sounds like a sensible practice drill.

Exactly!!!!

Always be prepared!

Yes. If you get the Ruger polymer mags, they can be loaded through the top of the action without removing the mag.
