Which Calibre Should Be Consigned to the Grave

I am curious how one could get a 270 into a 243?
Agreed

I had a patient who blew up a Browning A-bolt in 270 by firing a 308 down it, but wouldn’t think it would be possible to chamber a 270 in a 243. The gun did what it was supposed to do and directed the gas away from him. He was uninjured but the gun did not fare so well.

I only know my patient’s story because he kept the 308 casing on a necklace to remind him what a moment of inattention can cause. It looked like a 45-70 cartridge

IMO, the .300 Weatherby is the best .30 caliber cartridge ever devised!

(When you collect a bunch of eccentrics, what should you expect?)

I just bought a .340 Weatherby. (I already had a .338 Winchester)

IMO, the .340 Weatherby is the best coastal brown bear and polar bear cartridge ever devised...

Maybe, I just like Weatherby's...

They sure are pretty, and IMO something about the stock tames the recoil.

I'm sure your mileage may vary.

I'm still looking for ugly, but I just haven't been able to find it.
Dave it may be great but when you show up with a braked rifle with different bullet weights with one scope it is for sure the wrong choice.

I stand by opinion that all calibers are good but the more esoteric a caliber is, the more you need to be a dedicated fan. But anyway you slice it a shooter needs to know their limitations and the limitations of the cartridge.

I’m thinking maybe they put a .243 cartridge into a .270 chamber.

I’m sure that would go in.
That was my thinking as well. I don't think it would have hurt the rifle much, but the bullet probably went somewhere it wasn't intended. Not exactly competition accuracy. Kids, don't try this at home!

Can you make 5-600+ yard shots with .35 Whelen? It is giving up about 400fps at the muzzle for 200 grain bullets.
@Tanks
Never tried that range with any calibre.
I don't know how it's giving up 400fps with a 200gn as Remington loads one to 2,900 fps and it can be loaded to 3000fps in the whet and a nice 225gn accubond can be loaded to to 2,900fps so it ain't giving up much.
My skill level allows for a max of 400 but I hunt at less than 200 where possible.

I’m the same, and the one I shoot that’s younger than me is the 17hmr, and I was a child when the original came out before hornady "appropriated" the design (and I’m 62) and claimed it as their own
I don’t really dislike any cartridge, some I think are pointless or inappropriate for the use they are put to, but marketing has always led people the wrong direction

I think it was called the 17 mighty might by aa bloke out at broken hill. He also designed another one that no one has ever been able to duplicate. A tapered bore rifle with gain twist rifling. Fired a standard 22lr and squeezed it down to 17 cal with the standard 40gn lead 22 bullet.
I think his name was Arthur Langsford, he also designed a heap of cartridges around the 222rem ranging from 243,25 and 27 cal from memory.
Bob
You may also remember the 22 fieldmam rifles that used an aluminium barrel with a steel liner. Not pretty but practical and very accurate.

I agree totally useless if it was such a thing.
Wouldn't be any where near as good as the 35 WHELEN, now that is the best thing to come down the turnpike since button up boots and sliced bread.

I will say that thread was the best, most inventive troll in recent memory. It’s like saying, “Motherhood is only a fad” or “Apple pie and baseball are only for Communist sympathizers”. I can’t believe so many got sucked into such an obvious troll.
@analog_peninsula
True but it's fun bagging out cartridge we don't like in a safe environment and listening to others opinions

They are nasty
One shot was enough for me
@Flbt
When I was in the states I got to shoot a 458 Lott in a Ruger No1 with full house loads. Everything I had heard it was a mean kicking SOB but to me it was very manageable and not bad at all.
I imat off the bench it would be a different story.
Maybe the older I'm getting the less brain cells I have.

That would have been Arthur Langsford , nice old chap. He was the uncle of my friend Howard Bishop, who has also passed away. His company was called Myra, after his wife, he was the ultimate tinkerer, he based a whole series of cartridges on the 222 case, 17,25,270 etc, and designed and produced both a 17 cal on a 22lr and on a 22mag cases(weirdly identical to the 17mack2 and the hmr of later claim) And the taper bore rifles were the extruder series using 22lr rounds, down to 20cal and 17 cal without leading. My gunsmith friend has some of the original reamers and I know where the others are.

In photo order
One of Arthur's case reforming press's with a 50BMG for scale, it’s a solid little beastie
His own loading of 308 and a box of 17-222
Note the date on the box
Original un-used 17 Tini-mite twenty round box , somewhere I’ve got a box of loaded rounds …..that look just like an hmr….

Everything old is new again.
Trust the Americans to steal our ideas and try and re-invent the wheel and try and call it their own.
We Aussie lads know better and quietly chuckle at them

It was probably because it may have had a brake on it, and the windshield reflected a lot of the sound back into his ears. Check out this video on how powerful muzzle blast from brakes really are!
@Rifleman97
Great video but gave me a bit of a chuckle.
I don't know anyone that's stupid enough to put their hand around a muzzle brake or their head close to one.
I do know some very dumb people but none are that dumb
Bob

I dont think the ceed is inferior to the sweed.
There just was no reason for the creed because we all ready had the sweed and 260
@Flbt
The creede is a fine hunting cartridge within its limit like the Swede.
The thing that annoyed me was all the hype and advertising to ram it down people's throat as the next best thing.
Like Winchester did to the 243 and 270.
I know that's business but not my liking.
Bob

Yet another reason to NEVER use muzzle brakes! I've never owned a hunting rifle with a muzzle brake and I never will.
@matt85
Muzzle brakes have their uses. I have one for my Whelen that allowed me to shoot it after shoulder surgery. That way I was still able to enjoy my rifle.
Now I don't need it but do enjoy pissing loudmouth know it all's at the range by using it sometimes. Quietness their mouth down. Sometimes I just like being mean.

@Safari Dave
Ugly is easy to find for me.
I just look in a mirror and there's ugly looking back at me.
Bob

I agree with you on the cartridge selection. There are five magnum cartridges below .375-caliber that really make the juice worth the squeeze in my opinion: .300 H&H, .300 Weatherby, 8mm Remington, .340 Weatherby, and .358 STA. The first is a classic with outstanding flexibility and accuracy potential across an incredibly wide range of bullet weights, while the other four push the limits of useable power in their respective weight classes without drastically going into the realm of diminishing returns.
@RedTag
I don't need the juice that much.
My Whelen suits me fine, I don't need to squeeze any harder for my needs with the 358 STW.
To me the stw ain't worth it for all the extra powder, recoil and magnum length action to gain 100-150fps but to each their own as long as you enjoy the squeeze .

.25-06 and Nosler Ballistic Tips. I spent two days chasing deer and pigs wounded by this combo when helping a hunter in a group hunt. I finally gave him my .308 with Barnes. He dropped every animal from there on. The very next week he bought a .308 and has done well ever since.

Anytime a hunter showed up with a nice shiny new Weatherby rifle, the ranch owner would turn and whisper to call the man with tracking dogs and have him on standby.

The ranch owner also imposed a requirement of a .270 Win as a minimum and that reduced problems a lot. In reality, hunters with .270, .308, 7-08, and .30-06 seem to deliver more consistent results than all others.
@Tex .416 - I like traditional calibers including those you mention (.270, .308, .30-06) and would never use a “Magnum anything” for deer/elk/moose….But, if someone can’t kill a deer with a .25-06 it’s certainly NOT the caliber, almost certainly poor shot placement and “remotely possible” poor choice of bullets. For “Pigs” I have No Idea because the only pigs I’m interested in a next to Eggs in a frying pan

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
Finally back to somewhat normal I missed reading the messages and posts
