Which Calibre Should Be Consigned to the Grave

I know, I know my only concession is that I am actually trying to find a 6.5CM barrel for my Q Fix. Noveske's new barrel is on my radar.

That will give me a 6.5CM for Eastern Whitetail, varmint, 600 yard local competition, and out west Antelope.
30.06 for black bear, medium plains game, hogs, and mule deer.
.375HH for Bigger plains game, Buffalo, and Moose.
Anything on the planet I anticipate hunting or wanting to hunt.

Thinks like Elk dont call to me when I can hunt Africa for the guided price.

is what it is but simpsons have lots of decent 6.5x55 rifles for the price of a barrel

Every cartridge I shoot except one was designed before I was born. I'm nostalgically stuck shooting classic long-action cartridges from a century ago.

I’m the same, and the one I shoot that’s younger than me is the 17hmr, and I was a child when the original came out before hornady "appropriated" the design (and I’m 62) and claimed it as their own
I don’t really dislike any cartridge, some I think are pointless or inappropriate for the use they are put to, but marketing has always led people the wrong direction

A few weeks ago there were a couple threads stating that the .375H&H should be banned from buffalo hunting and it was inadequate for plains game. So I say the .375 H&H! Not really, just stirring some sh@t.

Here's a short list of the ones whose demise would not cause me any distress. A lot of these choices are based on personal bias not technical merit:

1. Anything with the word "Weatherby" in it.

2. For some reason I can't explain, I seem to have an aversion to acronyms. So feel free to stop making ARC, PRC, RCM, RUM, SAUM, WSM & WSSM cartridges whenever you feel like it.

3. Let's just convert all of the Remington 280's and have the 280 Ackley Improved be the de facto choice. Do we really need both?

4. The 7mm Backcountry (unless of course we decide we really really need 80,000 psi proprietary cartridges in our lives).

5. I doubt I'll every own anything with the words "Nosler" or "Dakota" stamped on the barrel.

Never understood the 280AI - need more than a 280 remington buy a 7mm remington. I am s fond member of the plain and simple 280 remington, the 7x57 and the 7mm remington mag.

I woudl further mention 270 win nothing a 7x57 or 7x64 did not acheive in spades

I know, but as pitchforks are banned in Iceland and indeed flaming torches will stop us reaching our carbon whatever - I feel I am safe here

Well this new powder facilitated a change from large bore rifles for medium game to the medium bores we use now.

As did jacketed bullets, they made up for the poor performance of large lead balls.

It wasn’t the calibers that made a difference; it was the components; just like bonded and mono metal bullets have changed things in recent times.

Guns/bullets don’t make bad shots, shooters do

But a good shot can fail with a poor bullet and/or caliber. That doesn't mean that you couldn't possibly kill a cape buffalo with a precise shot from say a .223 with a frangible bullet, but there is a good reason why such a stunt is illegal. A good shoulder shot to take the heart and lungs with a .375 H&H works well, but would simply fail with the .223.

Look at all the calibers developed after Nitro was developed. Aside from classic BPE calibers rejigged for nitro 500, 450 etc, look at all the medium bores that became the preferred stalking rifles than the large bores of yesteryear. I’m not saying the calibers made any difference, I’m saying the staunch large bore BPE hunters lamnented about these new small high velocity (at the time) rounds. Just like how people complain about new calibers (CM’s, 6.8 Western) on here.

And how we still fight about mono vs bonded vs cup and core. People are stubborn and resistant to change, but that doesn’t mean that a new calibre doesn’t deserve to exist because someone doesn’t like it. Let the market decide.

I don't necessarily think any needs to be flushed, but all of these newer ones - PRCs and such - hold no interest for me. I just don't think they do anything groundbreakingly different that already existing calibers do. It's all shiny objects for today's ADD society, IMHO.

And who made the decision to use the particular bullet on the particular game? The shooter. Everything has design/use limitations, and we can’t blame them when the fail to work as designed outside of design parameters. Know your gear
