Best Big Bore Bolt Action Gunsmith in US

My rifle is at new England custom gun getting a scope mounted. I've heard good things about them so that's why I sent it there

That's a good reference I forgot about. Mark at NECG and his gunsmiths are excellent magazine rifle smiths. I wouldn't hesitate to let him do the work and I forgot I have previously used his services on a take down westley richards on a mauser action myself!

I have two bolt action rifles I want to smooth up in terms of extraction after firing. JJ Perodeau does all my DRs but long ago stopped doing bolt action work except for things like opening up my Rigby 275 for larger bullets
I will gladly send my two rifles anywhere in the US to do this work
Please let me know your experience and contacts
Thanks so much for your help!!!
Thanks so very much everyone for your help! I sent my rifles out to Kevin Weaver today who said he could smooth them out given the actions are just not as smooth as I want. He told me to expect them back in November

You won’t be disappointed. He’s currently “smoothing” the feeding on my CZ550 .458 Lott. I met him a number of years ago at a gun show here where he had a couple of his smaller bore custom rifles on display. I had NO idea he built and tuned up large bore rifles until @CZDiesel bought his .470 Capstick and told me about Kevin Weaver’s expertise with building and tuning big bores. When I brought my CZ to him, I was able to fondle the custom .470 Capstick he had built and now has for sale. Beautiful rifle! He’s a great guy and is only 35 minutes from me.

Bummer he said he is “years behind today”
Mark just recently stocked a rifle for me - stock and bedding only, no meetal work. He turned it around in less than 6 months.

There are many expert metal smiths out there. I recommend going to the website of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild (ACGG). the members and their particular skills are listed with contact information. These guys must be peer reviewed before being accepted for membership. I would send you to Steve Heilmann, but he recently passed. Try the ACGG website, can't hurt to look at what's available.

Excellent advice.

Todd Ramirez is about as good as it gets on fine bolt actions....

I ended up going with Kevin Weaver I just got off the phone with Todd Ramirez. what a pro! I had been given some wrong information by one of his people which can happen. Todd is fully open to accepting work and of course repair times always depends on what is needed. I left the call very impressed with him and fully understand why @midwest recommended him!

Truly one of the best.. both his work, and his professionalism... Ive been very impressed with him each time I have spoken with him.. and Ive never seen one of his rifles that isnt an absolute work of art.. he is a perfectionist in all the best senses of the word..

Sir, you are fortunate to be so close to a good gunsmith!

My personal choice for almost 2 decades was just 45 minutes from me, he did great work, and I could get him on the phone.
He has recently retired, well deserved, now I think

Now I think I may have to drive to Texas to talk with a gunsmith in person.

Todd has done feed work on my 458 Lott and Jeffery as well as install crossbolts on my 404 Jeffery. Not cheap But good work. But he is opinionated as all get out. Ever see a gunsmith that wasn’t opinionated?

No!!! And God Bless ‘em for it. But when you find one you agree with, he’s like a brother! ;-)

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
