What do you carry your ammo in when on safari?

I practiced reloading from a culling belt before the hunt. While sneaking in and out of many cow elephant groups looking for a dry tuskless I felt more confident carrying 10-12 rounds easily loaded. Maybe it was unwarranted, but I watched too many hunting shows of shootouts when several cows had to be shot quickly. I didn’t want to ask the tracker for my extra rounds.

For Buffalo and bait animals. Just an ammo pouch on a separate belt.

For DG, I bought a nice Murray culling belt. The one with the leather loops on the canvas belt which was more comfortable for me. I also acquired a belt slide for carrying 5rds of 375 for PG hunting. In practice, I never used either one. My Tag Zimbabwe hunting vest had elastic loops that held five rds of 375 up to 458 and this was so practical and efficient that I used this for all hunting with the larger rifle. It worked well for me. My rifle holds 5 rds and the vest held another 5 and I saw no reason to carry more. In the pic below you can see the 375 ammo in my vest loops despite the fact that I was using the 7mm at the time.

For PG with smaller calibers, I have a green suede leather covered cartridge slide. It holds up to 8rds of 7mm, 308, 30-06, etc. Since I use the Rhodesian carry method, with the rifle slung muzzle down on the weak side, I place the ammo slide on my belt on my right side making it convenient, quiet and fast to access. Often, the small caliber slide rode in my backpack in the Bakkie, when it was not being carried on a stalk. The larger caliber ammo was on my person at all times.

I like the silly flap. But only because the loose rounds were banging around in my fanny pack.
You lost me. What does a belt ammo carrier have to do with a fanny pack? My point is you don't want to fiddle with a flap (that serves no purpose-style maybe?) when an elephant is bearing down on you and you need to reload.

It was a joke Philip. Pretty sure nobody wears a fanny pack on a hunt.

I carry 4 extra on my slings, which I’ve been using for 25 plus years, one round in each of my front pockets, and my PH will carry a couple for me…

Easy setup for quick access.
Just for reference, the rifle stock carry is great as long as it is secure. But, I watched a guy who was hunting bear and moose in a remote Alaskan site who used a rifle stock ammo slide similar to yours. They hiked miles up a mtn and were glassing for tgts when a big Bull Moose appeared below. They put on a long stalk up and down the rough terrain for a few hours before taking three shots that downed the moose with his 338wm rifle. At that point he had one rd left in the rifle and went to reload and found that ALL of his ammo had fallen out! Now he had one round only left and all his spare ammo is miles away in camp.

That is bad enough but in addition, his guide is armed only with a pistol (bad move in bear country) and the three shots on the moose are like ringing a dinner bell to brown bears that have learned that this means an easy meal off the gut pile. They spent several tense hours quartering and packing out what they could before dark. He survived that ooppsie but learned a major lesson. I considered this when I chose to use the loops in my vest but I first tested them for security during a week long hunt the year before and I always had another half box of 10rds in my back pack nearby.

As for who uses a fanny pack to hunt? I do, all the time. I put the items I am most likely to need in the fanny pack and carry it with the pack on my front for easy access. Range finder, para cord, knife, snake kit, hunting license, etc are all typical contents. I use it for everything from squirrel and deer to Blude Wildebeest. It is very handy. Not stylish but what the Hell? This frees space in my back pack for spare ammo, bush lunch, water, poncho if in wet climates, etc.

Nothing fancy. I have a small 'battery' of slides, to suit rifle / cartidge. Top is a custom job for use with a double, bottom is a 'Rigby', made by Els I think.

I really like this wallet from @RIGBY because it’s separates the rounds in pairs:

I also have used this one also from @RIGBY, which has a flap to prevent rounds from falling out but which can quickly be opened:

A couple of routes I have gone... I use that bottom one here at home in Alaska.

I stand corrected. Fanny pack in the wild! I'd wear one, but I'd need to somehow unhitch it from the bottom of my belly to get to it. Much shade under there. Everything would stay cool.
