Hunting reports
Africa

Good evening gang, I'll be heading over with D&Y in Mid Sept for my first dangerous game hunt. I'll be going after buffalo and maybe a few extras. We've hunted Africa before, so I know about the "pack light - then cut that in 1/2" rule. LoL....but I was hoping for more useful tips.

I've got the basics; rifle, ammo, sling, binos, gaiters, well broken in boots, etc. Any "non-standard" items that are essential?

What temps could I expect in Sept in Chewore S?

What about OTC meds?

Thanks everyone! I'm sure i'll have more questions as the next 45 days CREEP SLOWLY BY!!!

Thanks RB. Didn’t think about that. I’ll have to dig through my Alaskan gear. I know I have a couple somewhere.

I’ve hunted right next door in Dande twice at the same time of year into early October.

Highly suggest several things.

The head net as suggested above, never wore it walking but sure did when stopped for a break.

A small battery fan, I bought something off amazon, like 4”, runs on AA batteries. I have a little solar charger panel I set out during the day to recharge them. good at night to sleep. I use the same solar to top off my phone for pics.

Electrolyte powder to add to water. I use Scratch products and their energy chews, but lots on the market.

Good sunscreen.

It’s pretty warm, I took a couple of very light weight shirts and I wear light hiking pants; but you wont need jackets or anything like that. It never got under mid 80’s at night and over 100 more then a few days both trips.

Electrolyte drink powder is a big one. Definitely bring some bug nets for the mopane flies, but I’d also suggest a breathable neck gaiter. When walking I wear it over my nose and ears then switch to bug net if we sit. It helps protect from sun too. Chewore is a tsetse fly area. You might want to bring some cortizone cream in case you react to their bites and some skin so soft bug guard for temporary tsetse repellent.

I second the battery operated fan suggestion. I took rechargeable batteries for it. Charged them when they ran the generator during the morning and evening. It was blasted hot in August when I went. Didn’t really bother me much during the day. The fan would help me get to sleep and by the time it ran out of juice I’d be asleep and it would have cooled off.

I’ve heard lightweight synthetic clothes are a no-go bc they can burn when being ironed. Was I given a line of bull?

I’ve seen it, but I still wear them on some hunts. Just know it’s a possibility. Cotton is better. Remember too camo is technically illegal in Zimbabwe.

Rifle mounted flashlight, and head lamp, spare batteries. I prefer the type with AA or AAA batteries, because you never know how will be with recharging in diesel powered camp.

I have never had an issue with laundry in any way shape or form, just my experience in over a dozen camps in SA,Namibia,Zimbabwe.Tourist and hunting over last 20 years.

Not a cotton fan at all, I dont wear the stuff at home either. Hanes mesh boxer briefs, Thorlos wicking socks, Wrangler ATG pants, usually shirts are from fishing places like BassPro.

Maybe Im just lucky. Never had a PH complain about it, we always get what we are after, maybe that makes them not care. lol

Got the fan and rifle mounted flashlight in the Amazon basket. lol.

Something I forgot to mention is that making my rifle. Gravy travel has helped me with all that. Are you guys putting AirTags in your luggage? Seems like it would help give peace of mind.

I use 3 AirTags. Rifle, checked bag and backpack

Temps can vary, I experienced mid 30s Celsius in the day. A few days overnight dropped to 15. It's always funny seeing trackers bundled up to stay warm when I was in shorts.

To be comfortable in the pickup just pants/ a vest or light sweater was enough.

Mopane flies are fun. Like mentioned, when your moving you never notice them but stopped for lunch etc they come after your sweat gland on sides of head I find. Tsetse fly is nice too. First fly I ever smacked and it flew away saying thankyou can I have another. Quickly was taught you smack and then twist/grind you hand down to fly them proper.

Enjoy it. Proper area and hunting.

I asked my PH this once and he said 'the laundry guys can read a label!'

However, remember thick cotton will stop a biting tsetse fly better than thin acrylic

Ditto

It's the laundry ladies who will occasionally burn through the synthetic stuff with a hot iron if not careful. I'm sure the PHs are good with any material that isn't white, blue or noisy. Recently, Buzz mentioned on a podcast that he didn't like the hunters showing up in those very light-colored khaki shorts. Essentially white to an elephant I think he said.

a pair of slippers to pop on if you get up in the night to go to the loo. if you tread on a scorpion your hunt is over.

Man, what type of scorpions do yall have over there Kevin?? We have little ones here in Texas, I guess as their sting is essentially like 2 yellowjacket stings at once but in 30 mins all is good.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
