I'm heading to RSA in June. Flying delta from Atlanta to Jberg. Done this trip multiple times.
This year I plan on heading to Capetown after I finish DG hunt in Botswana. Does anyone have experience flying delta direct flight from Capetown to Atlanta? Is this flight just as easy as the Jberg to Atlanta flight? Thanks

Yes, same flight. The JHB-Atlanta flight stops over in CPT now. With the plane used for that specific route, they can't take off with a full tank of fuel from JHB due to the altitude, so stop over in CPT to refuel.
OR you can fly from CPT direct to Atlanta, but the cost of that flight is higher than from JHB.

The only comment that I can make is that I know JHB airport so well, so will take on a short layover and back myself to make it. Cape Town is relatively new to me, so a little bit hesitant when I have to find new places within the building to possibly sort out issues under time.

Flying return from Cape Town to Washington for DSC in 3 weeks.

I thought the Delta flight, JNB to ATL and CPT to ATL are two completely separate flights. From what I've read, JNB high altitude, 5558 ft, is an issue for takeoff roll. However, JNB has a 14,500 ft long runway and the long, international flights tend to take off at night when it's cooler.

CPT on the other hand is near sea level, however the longest runway 10,500 ft.

This is the JNB to ATL flight tracker info, not showing any connections through CPT. It does appear the Delta Flt 201 is not everyday during this time of year. Perhaps Delta is alternating every other day between JNB and CPT flights

CPT to ATL doesn't fly everyday:

The Dec 19 -Dec 20 CPT to ATL flight apparently couldn't make it all the way and had to land in Miami. I am guessing that Miami and San Juan, PR are alternates, in case of not enough fuel to get to ATL.

Well shit, now its not only at home where I get told that I'm wrong... :ROFLMAO:

There is definitely a flight from JHB that stops over in CPT, but as you state, it might very well only be certain planes that need to do this.
However, what I do know is that if you are on a flight that takes off from JHB and stops over in CPT, it is cheaper to fly from JHB than getting on in CPT. Also, you can't book from JHB and tell them that you will get on in CPT. They flag you as a no show.

THey never got approval for the triangle route. THere are two separate flights it seems.

I have a good friend who is a Capt for Delta and flies this route, and they are two separate flights.

Wow I had no Idea DL200 was only 3 times a week in January! Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday. ATL-CPT nonstop seems to also be 3 times per week.

I plan on using Henry rifle permit to assist in capetown to eliminate the problems of new place/ new building. Used them many times in Jberg and they provide 5* service.

I must have been in another universe when I was on the flight from JHB to CPT to Atlanta.

I believe Delta did this route for a bit. It turned out that is better for them to have two separate flights.

Are there Airlink flts from Cape Town to East London?

They are excellent.

Delta just announced this week that starting this coming June they will be flying a new configuration A350 between ATL and JNB and also ATL and CPT. Each route will have their own dedicated flights. The new configuration removes about 30 main cabin economy seats, removes one row of premium select seats and adds several new Delta One seats. By doing this new configuration they stated that it would lighten the planes enough that they would have no take off issues from the higher and hotter JNB flights and have plenty of fuel capacity. They would also not have to leave some of the cargo behind as they have had to do occasionally in the past on certain hot days. By adding more high ticket Delta One seating it will make up for the lost revenue from taking out the economy seats. My guess is we will see economy seating ticket prices go up in price as well, probably all seats included. Comfort + seating numbers remain the same. Bad news though for those who liked to grab the 40J and 40A economy seats that had no seat in front of them so had extra leg room. Those seats were removed in the new configuration Delta stated.

Are the JNB to ATL sometime stops in MIA, due to the changing Jet Stream?

I understand how temperature, barometric pressure, and takeoff weight affects wing loading, fuel consumption, etc.

I think most if not all long-haul flights out of the Persian Gulf depart in the middle of the night.
(I hated those!)

I remember flights from DFW to Gatwick, and return, varying as much as 1 hour, due to the movement of the Jet Stream. Pilots told us we were riding nearly 200 mph tailwind!

I remember those too. Thankfully, DFW & IAH now fly into Heathrow. I alway hated the bus transfer between Gatwick & Heathrow which was included in the ticket price back then and BA transferred the luggage for you unlike now. But the Gatwick Express from Victoria Station was nice as there was a nice pub just right outside the station.

So true! I hated that bus ride. I've had a few pints at that pub, near Victoria station.

BA was a good airline in the 1990's. The only international flight I ever missed, was out of Gatwick on BA. The IRA had called in a bomb threat in London, and even though my cab driver tried like hell to get me to Victoria station on time, the BA check-in was closed. Hence the pub.

I went on to Gatwick, and Delta gave me a seat on their flight for no charge.
Those were the days of real customer service.

Not sure about MIA, but in years past, Dakar, Senegal seemed to be the planned mid route refueling point. MIA is an extremely busy airport and I'm guessing Dakar is not.

Forgive me if this is the incorrect area, I signed up to this forum just now because I wanted to be on the list to purchase a copy of your autobiography. Please feel free to pass my information along to whomever is selling. Thank you so much. I look forward to it!
I like the Tillie in my picture. They are supposed to fit loose (2 fingers inside hat band), have mesh for cooling, and hold their shape after washing.
