to start off, I have a canon eos rebel xs with a standard 18-55 lens and a 75-300 lens. I was planning on taking it but think it is prudent to take a nice camera i can fit in my pocket and not always lug around the eos and my gun.

i have been reading posts and researching and have narrowed it down to a couple but other choices are welcome.

sony dsc-rx100 gen 1

Sony DSC-HX50V

My questions are would the hx50 be good choice and eliminate the need to take the eos?

is the rx100 worth the extra $250? I like the 1" sensor but zoom is limited.

This will more than likely be my only chance to go to Africa ( I know everyone says i will go again but it won't be in my budget) so my pictures will have to last me a lifetime.

I also want to use them to capture some video so i don't have to take a camcorder.

thanks in advance for your input.

Biggdawg - I have the same camera as you do with an additional lens. I took it on my recent safari and left it in the camera bag in the bakkie while we were tracking the animals. Once I had one on the ground I was able to take lots and lots of good pictures with it. I was also able to take many pictures while we were locating the animals. I did have a small point and shoot with me as a back-up thought. I wish I would have had a back-up on my first moose hunt in Alaska. Now all I have is a few semi-focued pictures of the hunt because the camera i had at the time was having so technical issues.

Grady,

What lenses do you have for your eos?

I have also contemplated getting a less expensive point and shoot but I am the type that likes to have the best that i can afford and i would hate to have my pics not turn out right and never get the chance to take some again.

oh the decisions we have to make lol

thanks for the input i was planning on leaving the eos in the truck when we walk out but i real dont' want to miss a photo if i have the opportunity

I bought the Sony HX50V,,I,m still messing around with it But so far I, Impressed,,a Pic thru the front window of my car at 40mph..not to shabby

Bigddawg - I have the same two that you have plus the Canon EF-S 18-135. I got it on Amazon. It is a great all around lens that has become my primary. I have taken may great pictures with it. Here is one that I took with the new lens on the fly as we were driving by.

Bring the Canon EOS. Keep it in the Cruiser or have the tracker carry it. You will enjoy having the photos from it.

Well at least one thing is decided,I will be taking the EOS. now to just decide on the pocket camera

Rob44 that looks like an impressive picture from the hx50v. It just might work, i have been wanting to handle the 2 cameras but no body local has them in stock. I should probably just save the 250 bucks and get the hx50v.

Rob44 have you taken any indoor pics? low light?

I went with the hx50. I know me. I wouldn't carry the big one. Here is a picture of a nyala target at 200 yards. Pretty good. I also attached a pic I took indoors in low light to give you an idea.

one last question for you guys, how well can you see the image on the screen when you are outside taking photos?

i see most of the ones i am looking at only have the screen and no viewfinder.

going to drop the $$ tomorrow just wanted to double check on that.

thanks for all your help.

Great question...

I have the 50 and is screen only with no viewfinder. I was concerned as some of the reviews I'd read stated this to be an issue. I tried it it Texas last week in very bright sun, including sun at my back, and didnt find it to be a problem. You can adjust the screen brightness up and down in order to save battery. I wonder if folks who have an issue are on a lower setting an don't realize it? I did need to turn it up from the factory setting in bright sun. Battery hasn't been an issue.

I got an extra two battery pack off of Amazon for about that much as I recall. The nice thing was that not only did it come with a wall charger, but a cig adapter as well. I figure that will be really nice for deep in the bush where I don't have access to electricity. Places like my whitetail lease here in Georgia. :)
