Anybody seen Blackhorn 209 in stock recently?

Right now you can also buy it direct from Hodogon's website as well so it's out there, but expect to pay even more for shipping it. I'd go find it in store if at all possible if you need small amounts as it will be a lot cheaper this way.

I use it and will continue to use it but the costs are stupidly ridiculous now. I use a cva paramount htr. I use 150gr by volume but I weigh out each charge which I think is 105gr by weight. I can't remember. Using that much powder per shot is a real gut punch when it comes to cost.

I’m a big fan of BH209. The time saved in cleaning pays for the extra cost.

I learned that i can clean BH 209 just by pouring hot water down the barrel, then swabbing, it is much, much easier than with pyrodex.

Couldn't agree more. No more half hour long muzzleloader cleaning sessions.

Shipping is basically the same if you buy one or four bottles. (they have a 4 bottle max)

I know some folks who bought 4 and split shipping. I cant drive to a store even if they have some on less then a couple gallons of gas; so $13 was a good deal.

No, I've never been in there, thankfully it would appear. I was just having a bit of fun at the expense of an acquaintance who is from Athens. He's half a bubble shy of plumb! Figger there's something in the water up there...

Actually, the time I spent in the area with he, his family & friends, I really liked it. Better than here in overcrowded York Co, 30 miles north of the Mason-Dixon. He lives here as well but still owns his family property in Athens. His brother owns the adjacent farm that we hunted on.

You used to have a good SxS gunsmith/stock man there outside of Athens but he's now in Jersey working for Griffin & Howe.

There's no water needed whatsoever to clean a barrel with BH209. Just clean the breechplug and barrel threads as you would normally, and swab the barrel with regular barrel cleaner like you'd use on a centerfire rifle.

Ah ha! a segue I tried Pyrodex when if first came out in about 1976. Contrary to all the hype and marketing spin it was (and still is) miserable crap. After that I stuck with real BP. So if I hunt during a BP or so-called primitive arms season or shoot any of my muzzleloaders it has been and will continue to be with real BP. If I wanted to hunt with a regular high power single shot I would use a 300 WM in a Ruger #1 and cut through the "primitive arm" pretense. BP is easy to clean/swab in the field with ballistol/water mix (moose milk). After shooting for the day... hot soapy water, hot clean water, dry, light oil. Not rocket science and does not require tennis elbow scrubbing.

When I hunt with a muzzleloader I hunt for the close shot... less than 100 yards. I give nothing up using open sights and real BP in a primitive arm. One of my favorites is an original M1841. It shoots to POA at 50 yards- I guess on an Africa hunting forum one should say, "regulated". The best load is about 55 gr of FF German Wano (Graf) BP under the Lyman 54 cal hollow base Minie of pure lead. This batch of BP by Wano from Graf cost about $10 per pound with shipping a few years ago. BP does not deteriorate so has an indefinite shelf life of several lifetimes- not so with smokeless. Current price at Graf is about $26 per pound plus shipping. I've no interest or need for any substitute BP, especially at current scalping, nose-bleed prices.

That's what I do, but I have rinsed the breech plug out under hot water in the sink. The normal solvents work great.

I would definitely choose regular black powder before I went with pyrodex lol especially in a fine looking firearm like that!! That is gorgeous!!!

Doubt you'd be familiar with it but, if memory serves, the properties were off Wolcott Hollow RD. While there, we went in to Sayre a time or two and ate at Beeman's.

When our local Wallymart had a decent selection of BP goods, I'd go in after season and snag the closeouts. I'm a strictly flint & black shooter and have picked up quite a few boxes of roundballs there for 4 or 5 dollars a box. One year I snagged 5lbs of Pyrodex and a pound of 777 for $32! Figured for that price I'd stash it away, just in case. I think it was right before Covid, they had half a dozen bottles of the older sized (12?, 14? Oz) bottles of BH209 for $14.99. Seeing the prices on this thread and it's current scarcity make me wish I had grabbed them. No use for it myself but it might have helped someone out.

Same here. I only use real BP, because I only shoot sidelocks (with exception to my 51 cal pocket (revolver) pistol, and 44 cal cap and ball revolver), 50 Hawkens, 10/11 gauge double barrel shotgun, 60/61cal - 20 gauge Indian Trade Gun.

I use "wet wipes" to clean the barrels, followed by dry patches, then swap and wipe inside and out with Bore Butter. It only takes about 15-20 minutes and done cleaning.

I've tried both 777 and Pyrodex. My accuracy when south and these 2 substitute powders seemed to be much more dirtier than real BP.

I know exactly where Wolcott Hollow is and my family and I had breakfast at Beemans yesterday morning lol. Small world! Yeah there are definitely some good deals off season, I bought a bunch of super cheap TC Shockwave bullets and sabots, also #9 musket caps for a dollar a tin.

This is all I have ever needed to do with 777. Hot tap water in a bucket, stick the muzzle in, swab 8-10 passes while the breechplug soaks in the bucket. A couple patches to dry. Wipe the breechplug off and dry. Gorilla Grease on the threads and reassembled in about 10 minutes. If I didn't have 10lbs of it in the cabinet, I might try 209, but 777 has worked well in my rifles. Real black, which is tough to find these days, worked well, but definitely messier than 777.
I have a partial pound of Pyrodex that I might just have to blow something up with, lol. It will never be used in any of my muzzlestuffers again. I have a Knights rifle of my nephew's that hasn't been operable for years after he left a Pyrodex charge in it for a week. I have not had any issue with leaving a rifle loaded for over 2 weeks with 777.

No need at all for water when cleaning BH209. Just clean the barrel like you would with smokeless powder. A couple patches down the barrel and you're done. The breech plug is the only thing that needs more attention than that. Of course, it's only compatible with inline muzzle loaders with a sealed breech.
