7x57 for big game

id be interested to know the coal of the 170g load Red, as I have a box of the 170g Orax and curious.

I do not know. They are loaded for me by a custom loader in Maryland (Hendershots).

I’ve used:
-Winchester Super X 175Gr soft point (now discontinued)
- Sellier & Bellot 175Gr Nosler Partition (now discontinued)
- Brenneke 177Gr TUG (bullet too fragile for big game)
- Federal Power-Shok 175Gr soft nose (powder charge too low)
- Hendershots Custom 175Gr Hornady Spire Point Interlock (the best)

The old Winchester Super X rounds worked the best for me. Among currently available choices, my recommendation is for the 175Gr Hornady Spire Point Interlock.

Speer also makes a Grand Slam bullet in 175Gr weight, but I have no personal experience with this one yet. If anybody has used them on big game, the their feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Swift officially lists a 175Gr 7mm caliber A Frame bullet on their website. But it never ever seems to be in stock.

In order to properly stabilize 170+Gr bullets, the rifle barrel must have a twist rate of 1:8.7 (such as seen on the currently manufactured Mauser 98 Expert & Diplomat rifles). Rifles with a 1:9.5 twist rate (such as most John Rigby & Co. Highland Stalkers) will stabilize only the lighter bullet weights properly (such as 140Gr).

The last batch that I loaded for my 7x57 comprised of, Hornady 175gr RNSP, 44 gr of Somchem S365 and PMP cases.


COL was .3050, average velocity was approximately 2550 fps maybe a touch faster. Was MOA in my rifle.

Worked well in the Bushveld and I shot a variety of plains game with it.

Great discussion. I really like seeing our own Hunter-Hibib using his 7X57 to take a tiger. I plan on hunting my leopard in 25 with my 275 Rigby using quick opening soft 154 grain bullets in a blind.

Are your 154Gr bullets Hornady Spire Points ? I personally prefer 170-175Gr projectiles in the 7x57mm Mauser, but 154Gr should be completely acceptable for leopard.

Love the low SD at 5.8! Then just a matter of checking high pressure signs. Also, H4350 good choice because of it's temp insensitivity. All the parameters point to a good load. Last .1" of accuracy may become unimportant compared to all the other attributes of a good hunting load.

7x57 Speer hot-cor 160 @100 yds 2600 fps mv. Yeah that’s a Texas white tail. Sounded like a baseball bat against an oak tree. Everything from a 57mm case is a winner. I live the Roberts hence the last name. A 75gr hammer bullet at 3400 fps wins.

175gr Hornady Interlocks At 2600 fps out of a Ruger #1 single shot 22" barrel has done well for me on Canadian big game. Also does well out of my 7x64 at 2700+ fps.

Sellior and Bellot 173gr SPCE at 2370ish seems to hold up as well.

Haven't recovered a single bullet yet from those combinations.

If i was looking for something more, i'd look at 160/175 Woodleighs/swift a-frame's but that has not been the case.

WOW, this thread was started Sept. 2018, & is still going strong! Long live the .275 Rigby aka 7X57, 7mm Mauser! I favor 175gr bullets, & am staying tuned!
