Will this locking ammo box be acceptable to the authorities ?

My ph just texted and said it should be fine and so did the ph I hunted with last year. It is the number of rounds and caliber they care about, not the box as long as it is locked.
How do you plan to check it separately on the way back? It’s very likely you won’t be allowed to put it in checked bag on way back unless you are planning to leave any excess ammo with PH.

I don't plan to check it separately, it will be in my checked bad where it belongs , just like last year

That’s been my plan several times too, but you may not be given that option on the way back and told it must be checked separately. What is your plan then?

Plano plastic case is 25 dollars…

My biggest concern would be here in the states. They would pull it from your checked luggage and be like wtf is this…

In an effort to conserve space in my checked bag, I made this locking device on an old 60 round Case Gaurd ammo box. It is much smaller than the box I have been using to transport 3 factory ammo boxes. Just wondering if it will be acceptable

You mention taking a checked bag. If you are taking a checked bag, there is no way you can be so tight on space that this box vs. a normal travel case saves you enough space for it to make sense.

They make quite small hard side travel cases.

Why do you think that?

Don't do that.

I have been hunting worldwide for 40 years and have seen how everything is getting increasingly difficult when traveling with rifles and ammunition. Nowadays a little detail that an authority does not like can completely ruin your trip. There are enough standardized containers designed to transport handguns or ammunition and that must be accepted by authorities and airlines, unlike homemade containers.

The authorities may ok it but airlines and TSA could be another story. There are instances reported on various hunting and this forum of ammo being left at the departure airport because of issues with boxes. You could take it but plan B will be buying expensive ammo in Joberg that may not be accurate in your rifle.

I doubt it. Get a good locking Pelican or something similar.

Remember you are at the mercy of the same people who require 4 locks on a case if it has 4 holes. So much stupid crap from airline staff to risk it. A small camera case or even an ammo box is $10 or less. Use one. Enjoy your trip with one less hassle. Just because they didn't make you check it separate last time doesn't mean they won't the next one.

Thanks for your thoughts, guess I will use a pistol case like I did last year, had no problems with that.

Please dont! Get a Pelican 1200 used on EBay. On domestic and regional flights in Southern Africa they make you check your ammo box separately. One of these days one of these cases is going to burst open in the belly of the plane and bye bye flying with ammo!

Thanks, but last year I never had any tags of any kind on my ammo box. It was in the bottom of my checked bag.
You've obviously not been on many different flight itineraries. When arriving in JNB and connecting you will be asked in most cases to remove your ammo and check it as a separate bag. This is why a Pelican case is a good choice.

Watching the “officials” in Zimbabwe literally count ammo one by one is frustrating enough! Can you imagine the circus that would ensue when they saw that contraption? Lol!
That gave me a good laugh Toby!

Pelican 1200 on EBay for $29.99. Why would anyone do anything else? It will hold 4 boxes of .300Win.

I'm not sure on this but don't you have to use TSA locks on your ammo box?
No, you don't have to use TSA locks on anything.

100% correct. Philip knows what’s up and I encourage you to follow his advice.

If you just need a small case I have one I would lend you for your hunt. as your solution is a very good case of farmer engineering (I can see my dad doing that same kinda operation) However all it takes is one TSA or one African policeman to take a WTF is this and you will now have a easily preventable problem on your hands.

Pelican 1200 and be done with it. Especially since @AZDAVE is being so generous offering his for loan.

@M70375! – Why? Why would you waste your time and possibly have an issue with TSA/Airline and your “Invention”?
>>>> Plus, Now you risk someone “stealing your idea” and getting their own PATENT on it !! <<<<

hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
