Why do you think that? It's an interesting decision, but I'm afraid the authorities won't appreciate it.
I admire the enginuity plus if gave me a good chuckle.View attachment 694925View attachment 694926In an effort to conserve space in my checked bag, I made this locking device on an old 60 round Case Gaurd ammo box. It is much smaller than the box I have been using to transport 3 factory ammo boxes. Just wondering if it will be acceptable
so much for trying to save space I guessTo you and I it looks like it’s as functional as anything you can buy on the market. Now put yourself in SAPS or Harare or wherever your destination is with people who might not share the same practical mindset. Seems to me like too much of a chance of an issue that has other solutions too readily available
Thanks, but last year I never had any tags of any kind on my ammo box. It was in the bottom of my checked bag. When you don't need that much clothing on a hunt it isn't that hard to put a good box into it, and remember you can place a few other things into it as well. Just stay under 11 lbs.
You'll also need a way to attach a baggage tag to it along with a luggage tag.
A small 30 caliber plastic ammo can works nicely.
Do you remember that scene in 2001 Space Odyssey with the early hominids staring in wonder at the mysterious monolith? To you and I it looks like it’s as functional as anything you can buy on the market. I believe that we all are presuming that you are flying within South Afric. Thanks, but last year I never had any tags of any kind on my ammo box. It was in the bottom of my checked bag.
That's why I laughed...picturing SAPS looking at that and trying to figure out what it is. Then there are 5 of them looking at it and opening their 3 ring binders to find a photo of it.Do you remember that scene in 2001 Space Odyssey with the early hominids staring in wonder at the mysterious monolith?
You can trust me when I tell you: will see similar looks from the security chaps in OR Tambo and especially in Harare....... they ain't never seen that thing, they don't have it in their manual, and they're not having it. That would be my guess.
Watching the “officials” in Zimbabwe literally count ammo one by one is frustrating enough! Can you imagine the circus that would ensue when they saw that contraption? Lol!That's why I laughed...picturing SAPS looking at that and trying to figure out what it is. Then there are 5 of them looking at it and opening their 3 ring binders to find a photo of it.
Thanks. One of my PHs from last year just told me that no black man in Africa is going to give a damm about my ammo box as long as it is locked. A Pelican 1300 is a secure and compact way to hold 5kg of ammo (about 4 or possibly 5 boxes, depending on what caliber), and will easily accommodate a small TSA or combo lock. And they've seen it thousands of times and won't bat an eye.
I did put an ID tag (stamped leather with metal wire retaining loop) on mine and and an Apple AirTag inside. You don't need an ID tag when it's inside your duffel bag on a flight to and from the USA. But if you're flying from OR Tambo to elsewhere in RSA or Africa, SAPS will want you to take the ammo box out of your duffel bag and check it separately, and then the ID tag and the Apple AirTag will come into play. And the nice strong Pelican 1300 will be a good choice to face the baggage gorillas.
By the way, Sam's Club sells a 4-pack of Apple AirTags for about $80, I bet Costco has them too.
My two cents.
My ph just texted and said it should be fine and so did the ph I hunted with last year. It is the number of rounds and caliber they care about, not the box as long as it is locked.Watching the “officials” in Zimbabwe literally count ammo one by one is frustrating enough! just trying to save space in the checked bag and it will certainly protect the ammo, it is going to be tucked away in the checked bag.Like others have said, if you anticipate having to check this ammo box separately on a flight from SA to anywhere else in Africa, you need a legitimate ammo box. I suggest a pelican or similar with good solid hinges. Not those cheap boxes with plastic hinges. And even if you’re flying straight to SA with no other flights, I’d still buy a good ammo box. Why pay big money to hunt and then scrimp on your equipment?
I would think this post is a joke, you can buy a better ammo case that would both protect the product and be acceptable for travel cheaper then this albatross.
