I'm with Elkeater on the 7x57/275 in the RH African. I'd put my down payment on that one!I’ll play the game.
I’d take a right hand Ruger M77 african in .275/7x57. Preferably with a bit higher grade of wood over the standard grade usually used on M77s. I actually really like the M77 II with the three position wing safety. I’m in the middle of refinishing the stock on my .300 win mag after years of abuse.
What about the lever action 44mag?Ruger .44 Magnum semi auto carbine. I emailed them awhile ago and was told they have no plans on producing them. Too bad.
It was certainly a different company when Bill Ruger was alive. If the red label is any example I wouldn't get your hopes up.
I thought this thread had died out a couple of months ago but I see that it has been brought back to life again. If you go back to my original post that started this discussion, you'll notice that it was more about consensus building than rifle building. While a semi-custom or special edition rifle may have been the final result, the majority of the respondents ignored the most critical factor: 49+ other people have to like your choice.
So the question being asked was "What rifle in what chambering would you buy that you think a large group of like-minded hunters would also think is desirable?". The question most people answered was "Here's the custom rifle I want". And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's a totally legitimate response that I appreciated because it gave me a good idea of how hard it is to get people to agree on something like this. I'd like to thank @spike.t for popping in on a regular basis to mock the futility of this endeavor to keep me humble. He wasn't wrong. We couldn't hit the halfway point on the minimum possible order.
Basically it was going to be a real challenge to get Ruger to just put a specific barrel on an existing action. But I think the only thing that wasn't requested was a "phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range".
If you specified something with a COL over 87mm, not going to happen. If you suggested a rifle that is no longer produced, same thing. If there's zero brass for it or it's only available for reloaders, another tough sell. I don't think Ruger is going to retool their production line to make a different receiver for a dozen rifles. I am pleased that most of you suggested some good classics. Not a Creedmoor to be found.

In going with what I take to be the original purpose of the thread, I believe that an African in 7x57 would have the support to request down payments and substantiate an order. A classic African cartridge and platform. (Notice that it's not a .774 Hedge Magnum Express)Now add in the proviso that a deposit must be laid down and watch 98% of the respondents disappear. And that’s why rifle companies don’t make low selling models.
Look at number three caliber on the Number 1 list. Ruger number one in 450/400. One has been for sale here on the classifieds since August 27th. without a buyer.
Why hasn’t anyone that posted that response bought that rifle. Everyone has their own reasons and that’s fine. I’m just pointing out that if someone in a relatively small company like Ruger went out on a limb with one of the models suggested. They better be ready to retire.
Exactly. Personally I’m not a huge fan of bolt action rifles, so I’m not gonna drop over a grand on one unless it has some historic value. For Ruger No.1, I already have a 458 and a 30-06, so don’t really need a 450/400, 404 Jeffery or 300H&H. But if the barrels were stamped with an “AH” or something else to commemorate id buy one in a caliber i dont need just for being a part of itNow add in the proviso that a deposit must be laid down and watch 98% of the respondents disappear. I would order a 416 Taylor M77 African today!Jumping in on page 12, but....Ruger African in 416 Taylor with a deal with Hornady for lots of head stamped brass.
My LGS has the Ruger #1 in 275 Rigby, in stock for $2100.There was one for sale on Gunbroker.
I thought that would be a good gun to.Ruger .44 Magnum semi auto carbine. I emailed them awhile ago and was told they have no plans on producing them. Too bad.
While dreaming, a Ruger #1 in 470 NE, 26 inch barrel, with a proper stock, and weighted with tungsten rods fore and aft to 10.5 pounds.
Hell, build another in .500 NE at 11 pounds and a really good recoil pad.
My Dad always said “When you dream, dream a good one!”
What about the lever action 44mag?
