Hi All!

I’m currently in Texas and have a .505 Gibbs by H Dumoulin & Fils-Milmort-Liege. I’m curious what the potential value is? I have no need for a big game rifle but would for it to end up with someone who does. I appreciate your thoughts!

I’ve attached a few photos, not the best but plan to upload a few more soon.

Firstly welcome to AH, you came to the right place. I have never owned one but Dumoulin rifles have a good reputation. Prices range pretty widely on their rifles. The devil will be in the details on this one I think. Condition, barrel length, stock length and weight will be big factors.

It’s an interesting looking rifle in a caliber with a strong following. That being said not everyone wants a 505. Looking forward to hearing more details.

Thank you so much for the reply. It’s a pretty large caliber with a unique history pertaining to Africa. This particular rifle was used in Africa and was well cared for. It’s truly a spectacular rifle but as you mentioned a unique clientele as not everyone wants nor needs a .505. I am looking forward to everyone’s input on this as well.

With that mentioned I’ll take a few measurements and a few more photos and get them uploaded as more information is always best.

Dumoulin is certainly one of the best, and this one looks good, but unfortunately, I can´t help you with pricing.

:S Welcome: to AH

Could you perhaps also share some photos of any and all markings on this rifle. Names, brands, serial numbers, proof marks etc.

There have been multiple Dumoulin makers, not all of them top makers. All producing everything from the most basic rifle that shoots, to the most bespoke and finely worked pieces of art that rival the great British houses. It is difficult to say from the current pictures where it would fall. Anywhere from maybe 1.5x the value of a CZ550 in same state and caliber, to 10x .

I did not spot any embellishments or engravings, so we will rather be looking at the lower bound.

Looking forward to seeing more. What it should be for sure is an excellent magnum Mauser action shooter.

Excellent rifle maker. Fairly rare caliber. You would need the right buyer. As a semi educated WAG I would put it in the 15-20k range. Others will be able to help you better.

You mention it has a unique history. If the rifle has documented provenance it may be worth more. You may want to describe the unique history when you post more photos and tell us how it came into your possession.

As promised, a few additional pictures along with a couple pictures laying next to a tape measure for reference.

I appreciate everyone’s responses. My father and I went on Safari back in 2008 in Tanzania where we spent a little over a month. Memories and experiences that will stay with me for a lifetime. The rifle belonged to the gentleman who we hunted with. He was of British Descent and had been organizing hunts for many decades. My father had it imported through a FFL. Upon his passing he left it to me. As I may never return to experience Africa in that capacity again; I have no need for a rifle of that caliber. I have several rifles that had memories including my Kreighoff .470 which was my rifle of choice. But I also had a .458 Lott which was my go to choice. The .505 is unique in its own way and it is great to look at. But I would feel better if it could make its way into the hands of someone who will appreciate not only its beauty but something someone would take back to Africa on a Safari of their own.

Thank for sharing the additional information, the rifle does definitely have an interesting story. It’s great to hear you want to ensure it returns to Africa.

I think even an expert (which I am not) would have trouble putting a price on it as it’s very unique. I have not seen a Dumoulin like it. Three especially interesting points (at least to me) is the magazine locking mechanism and the lack of sling attachment points and 22” barrel. One of the more interesting DG rifles I have seen in a long time.

The caliber is a double edged sword, it’s worth more because it’s a 505, but less people are in the market for that caliber. All that being said I would hazard a guess it’s not worth less than 10k, probably more. If the gentleman your father got it from was a hunter of note, that could also be a factor.

I appreciate the feedback. I wasn’t even sure where to start when it came to trying to determine a ballpark value. I was thinking 10K or north there of. I scoured online and reached out to some of my contacts who are FFLs but information out there is scarce. I didn’t think it would be all that difficult but I guess the more unique the rifle the harder it is to pinpoint. Thank you all again for the feedback; very much appreciated.

I don’t know where your at in TX but I would contact George at Champlin Arms in OK. He, or another well known personality in the world of DG rifles could probably check it over and give you an appraisal. A clean bill of health would also help with a sale.
Thank you! I will definitely reach out!

Enid is not far from me as I am in the Texas Panhandle; use to pass through there back and forth when I was traveling back and forth to Tulsa and wanted to avoid the I40 traffic.

It all depends on the Action of the rifle. I suspect this one is the Brevex400 as it has a solid side wall and is drilled on the front reciever to allow loading. I would say this rifle if it functions well and shoots straight is worth the price of any well made custom gun. I have a few such DG rifles that are not collectors grade but good honest working guns that were made with a bit more love that the run of the mill CZ. $8k minimum. I have a Few Belgium made rifles - they are all well made.
