US dollars

I saw in another post a outfitter asking for US dollars only to be transferred. When I made my final payment and transferred the money my back said they had to convert it to rand and do the transfer is this true or can you do it in US. My outfitter didn't ask one way or the other but just curious.

Funds do not have to be converted in South African Rand (ZAR) prior to be transferred. If you requested for US$ to be transferred this is what should have been wired by your bank. Funds are usually exchanged by the recipient bank prior to being deposited in the account holder or not if the account holder has a bank account in US$.

My Bank told me it was against the law for them to transfer it in USD. They might not have know I guess.

That is incorrect. And actually the Dollars don't have to be converted upon receipt if the receiver has a current account in Dollars.

You just need the receiver's SWIFT and IBAN codes.

I think the question was confusing, if the person in Africa only has a local account, the dollars do get exchanged into the local currency.

Simon is right, but that's not the same thing as the sender's bank refusing to send USD. And I would think it would be odd, to say the least, for an outfitter in Africa not to have a USD bank account.

Any bank should be able to send any currency the sender specifies, so long as you are not sending anything to an embargoed country to recipient, but that's another issue altogether (note that this might be applicable for wire transfers to certain persons in Zimbabwe).

Waterguy, you need to have a serious conversation with your bank, or find a new bank!
