G'day all hopping the brains trust can help with the identity of a mauser action that recently came to me, previous owner thought it was an FN action. Any help would be appreciated.
No markings on the barrel end of receiver.
Looks like a .30 on the rear.

There are no markings like any of the German or Swedish mausers nor the vz24 that I have

It appear to be a military mauser that’s had some work done on it.

It’s got the stripper clip slot in the rear, but from what I can tell in the pics,is missing the “hump”.

That would tell me someone machined the hump off and rounded the rear to a commercial mauser shape, and likely removed the military markings usually found at the front at the same time.

The serial number might give you an indication as some makes used distinctive numbers (for example vz24’s built for export to China have a P at the beginning of their serial number).. but that’s a crap shoot as many mausers just have a series of numbers...

The extractor claw looks a bit bent at the front? Or is that just the photo?

Thanks mdwest the extractor claw is flattened rather than bent and appears rather weak, i couldn't find any proofing or other marks that would help to identify sorry. Serial number is preceeded by an f

G'day Bushy. Your action may be one that originaly either didn't have a serial number or had it removed when someone "worked" on it. In Victoria at one time the police issued "F" prefixed serial numbers for use when registering an un-numbered (missing or defaced) action. Is the action threaded for large ring or small ring barrel thread? Many years ago there was a flood of Turkish mausers that were so ultra cheap that people had no hesitation about experimenting with them.

If you are in AU Bushy this is part of the preamble in a write-up I did on the build of my 404 Jeffery. The F on the left side of the receiver ring was added to the serial number when being rebarreled to 30-06 with the addition of the 30 you note. Otherwise it has been scrubbed.

This particular rifle, (a M98 military Mauser) started life in the FN factory in
Herstal, Belgium, made for the Colombian army, and was chambered in 30-06. I bought
it in Australia in 1982 and believe that it was a M24/50, an original in that caliber not one
of the 24/30's re-barreled after ww11 as they had Famage stamped on them which was
the Colombian arsenal stamping for this work and done to use the tons of surplus 30-06
ammo the U S shipped down to them. It was one of a shipment that came to Australia
in 1980 and had done some work as there was barrel wear

I think Garry is spot on. One of the reasons I like this forum is you get to learn something new each day.

Thanks very much for the info I'll check out the thread and post up a couple of better photos, 404 nice choice Von Gruff I'm hoping this one is decent enough as I would like to build a 9.3x64 with it but haven't measured anything yet.

Hahah I'll take it, not sure how true it would be though.

Friend of mine went around a took a snap of the bolt face in the receiver and measured with a ruler for me.
Receiver front ring length roughly 42mm or 1 5/8"
Width 35mm( 1 11/32" )
Threaded section from where the barrel contacts 16mm( 5/8" )

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
