Traveling With Ammo: South African Air's New Rules Lead to Confiscation

Its a pain
Different airlines
Different rules all around the world
U would think they could standardise and make it easier for everybody including themselves

Been to Africa 3x. Ammo was in rifle case every time.
Hmmmm that’s potentially a problem. But now the airlines don’t even check to see if your gun is unloaded! They let you self certify it is empty. I wonder what else they are letting get by. The only thing constant in air travel rules is inconsistency.
I am working on a Mongolia trip and trying to get info from AA and gun Rukeyser is nearly impossible!

Call the Mongolian Embassy in D.C.

Everyone should be aware that you must have a good, hard side, lockable ammo box placed in your checked baggage when departing the US. When making a connection SAA may make you take the ammo box out and check it separately. Hence the reason for the lockable (I use Pelican) box.
Credit should be given to Steve Scott for writing this piece in the Outfitters wire.

This is what happened to me last June. It felt a little weird picking up my x military ammo box off the carousel in Vancouver BC though, I gotta say...

It used to be that all US carriers required that the rifles be unloaded, ammunition in factory packaging inside the case. Some airlines may have changed their policy, but the agents keep going by the old rules.
In any case TSA, definitely knows there is ammunition inside the case because they always x-ray, and almost always physically inspect the inside of the case when you walk it to them.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ
