I won’t bore with the story but had a scumbag impersonating one of my nephews try to scam my 87yo mother this afternoon. Thankfully, since my father’s death, we’ve had numerous conversations about just these types of scenarios and she knows to talk to me before dealing with large sums of money. Even still, in her words- “they played so much on my emotions, I was just wanting to send the money.”

Aside from needing to vent, I hope this might act as a PSA if you have an elderly loved one in your life who might need a reminder to be vigilant.

Those scumbags are all over the place.

If I can make a suggestion. Get whoever is the executor of her will added to her bank accounts with a notification required for any xxxx amount of withdrawals from here accounts along with a limit on her CC's if she has any. Or talk to your attorney about protections you can put in place to protect her.

My brother in law did all this and a scumbag showed up trying to move her bank accounts to another bank in his name. That scumbag turned out to be my brother in laws brother who was trying to clean out his mother's accounts.

Know the feeling, my dad passed back in May and having keep close eye on 91yr old mother as to mail and phone calls she gets. She is same and at least asks me about things before doing them. I am added to all accounts and bank is set to notify me of anything unusual.

The details of the scam that you have mentioned are scarce, but I would strongly encourage you to contact local law enforcement, regional Securities and Exchange Commision office if this involves stocks or securities, and whatever regulatory authorities might have oversight of the crime. Almost always, good to contact your state’s Secretary of State which often has oversight of this kind of criminality. It’s a known fact that the elderly are susceptible to criminal scams. Protect your family, and do everything you can to create pressure on the scum.

Thanks to AI now, with just a few sentences that are publicly recorded (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram) they can even call people now and impersonate loved ones that way. I know people who have had that happen to them already. Scammers already suck, but now they’re beginning to sound like your loved ones too on the phone. Within a couple years they’ll be able to even FaceTime convincingly.

I’m sorry to learn of your recent loss, Mark. Cherish the time you have with your mother.

After my mother passed, my dad was scammed out of over $200,000USD.
The thieves are relentless and pervasive. They are completely deserving of ANY punishment that can be imagined.

I really know nothing to say to that other than I’m saddened that your father was one of the unfortunate ones who fell prey to these despicable parasites. I assume no funds were ever recovered and no one was held to account?

Good loving sentiments. I had 2 years with my mother after my father passed. Up until the end her mind was sharp and she told a couple of scammers to “go to hell “.
Of course I was on the account and protected her money.

My 65 year old sister, recently widowed was scammed out of $20000.
Today, my wife had to yell at her older sister on the phone , “Don’t do it , it’s a scam!” She already lost $2000.
Thieves that prey upon the elderly are special class of sh$t.

Partially drawn and quartered at dawn, and let the feral dogs do the rest.

That's terrible. I just got scammed out of $5k by a guy who was supposed to be a hot tub/swim spa technician. I did some work on mine and got into a scrape where I just needed help. Found this guy online. He comes out, goes over it all with me, actually did find a lot of stuff wrong with it. Hit me up for more and more money for parts, then asked for half down on the labor. I normally wouldn't do that, but I work with a lot of contractors and they've all been burnt to the point that many want 100% up front to do anything (I've gotten burnt that way myself....I do the work without a deposit and then they don't pay....). Anyway, gave this guy all this money, he was to arrive on the appointed day and do the work. Never showed up. Now he doesn't return calls. Took my money, and my swim spa (makes an endless current like you're swimming upstream...good for exercise) is still broken. My daughter who just graduated law school did some digging and within 10 minutes had all kinds of data on him. Turns out he truly is a criminal who's been arrested for impersonating a contractor, getting deposits, and running off with the money. I called the police. They're putting a case together on him. They asked me "Do you want him to come do the work now, or what resolution?" I said "I want my money back, then you can put him in jail." Cop laughed and said "OK, you're pressing charges!" I was a fool to give him so much money up front, but the guy talked a good game. I hate scamming thieves too.

Another tip to help keep you and your loved ones safe is to add a fraud alert to your credit which will require the credit bureau to contact you by phone or email before processing any new request for credit. I believe all you have to do is call one of the three main credit bureaus and put a fraud alert on your credit and it reaches all of them.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx
