This year I’m weighing my options for durable hip boots. Simple lightweight fishing waders aren’t going to hold up, but I’d like something for the marshes where it’s not deep enough to demand chest waders.

One of the areas I scouted out recently requires a walk from the truck, downhill through the woods, and into the marsh. Briars and branches vary on the way down as well as in the marsh. Something that will hold up to briars and pokes and snags is what I’d like to find.

So far I’ve identified Dan’s Briar Proof, and the Frog Toggs which look similar but likely don’t live up to Dan’s. Dan’s are expensive and I don’t want to drop the cash on a whim without real use reports on longevity of durability, comfort, etc. Any testimony of these or others I haven’t identified are welcome.

This is where I flushed a twofer limit of wood ducks on my first inspection. There’s probably a few hundred yards to the other side, with small islands for deer as well. I’d be better off with duct tape puttees than early season/fishing hip boots.

I really like LaCross. They hold up in the Southeastern brambles and whatnot getting to and from the water. However, I don't know what kind of devil plants you have in your neck of the woods. I defer to my wiser brethren.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
