As requested by several among you after my presentation I give you some informations about Senegal.
I go at least once a year to this country for several years.
This is a first step in Africa for many people. For the Europeans it is only 5 or 6 hours by plane. The cost is cheap. For the frenchies, everybody speaks our language. Usually the frenchies are going with a group of friends.
A standard package in this country is 6 days including 1 warthog. Usually you are looking for warthogs in the morning and afternoon it is time for birds shooting around the water.
A second warthog is authorized for 100 Euros.
Different places can authorize more due to the important number of warthogs destroying the fields mainly the rice.
We can’t compare autral Africa and Senegal because the density of the animals is very low. There is a small amount of antelopes and bufaloes around a national park in the east where few permits are given each year but never sure that will meet one of them.
You won’t find the numerous birds you can see in Argentina. This is a country for warthog only and not everywhere because some regions did not protect the fauna: too much hunters, non-observance of the law, and poatchers.
The good trophies are rare. The length is less than in South Africa but the diameter is often bigger. Many trophies are broken. 11” is a good trophy. 16” is exceptional. A strange difference: they don’t go to the water point at mid-day.
The hunt is interresting. Sometimes in the morning we can see warthogs loooking for roots but this is usually female and youngs. More often the warthogs are shooted later when they run away from their hiding place under low trees. You have 2 or 3 seconds to decide if this is a male and if the trophy is good enough. The shot is not done in the best conditions and we use often big calibers(i.e. 9,3x62, 300W, 375HH...) to stop them quickly even if the shot is not at the right place. This a little bit similar to our wildboar hunts in France.
