Scope for a 7mm PRC

What is a good practical scope (magnification/objective lens size) for a light weight back country 7mmPRC? Covering perhaps 100-500/600yrd…

I realize this is a bit of an open ended question, but just trying to get some opinions to formulate a direction between magnification and weight where you are lugging it around …maybe a 3x15 or 4x20???

I had a 4x20 on my 300wm for LD shooting so keeping that LD concept with a 7prc more is better

I just bought a 4-20 VX5 fire dot Leupold for a 6.5 PRC. I will get the CDS once I get a load sorted

Just used a 3-15 and 2-12 with the CDS in Africa on PG and it worked awesome. Made several 300 yard shots off of sticks. Fire dot really helped. Aim small, etc. Practicing beforehand also helped.

Frequently was in open savannah so there was no getting closer. Too many eyes watching.

I’m a big fan of keeping your magnification low enough to help in spotting impact. With that in mind, I have a Trijicon Credo 2.5-15x42 on my 7mm PRC and would pick the same thing if I were building again. While I target practice regularly, my self-imposed limit is may be lower than some at 500ish yards. Longest shot to date was a vervet monkey at 378 but it was more than enough scope for that and still witness the monkey somersaulting out of the treetop after the hit.

Similar but not the same but this is my backpack rifle-28 nosler with. Swarovski 3.5-18x44. Fits the rifle nicely and not bulky /heavy and swaro quality.

In a setup like yours, it looked like you don’t have iron sights. Is that right? Assuming so, do you carry some sort of backup or do you just take tour chances? The rifle I want to put a scope on doesn’t have irons and Im wondering if it’s worthwhile putting irons on or it’s an unlikely event that a scope dies in the field so not worth it.

This may be a tad more than you need, but I have a Kahles 3-18i on mine and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've lugged it all over West Texas hunting Aoudad, elk and mule deer and the weight is not an issue. That said, it is on a fairly light HCR rifle with carbon fiber barrel, so that may account for the comfortable balance. You're going to love that round if you haven't had the chance to use it in the field - it's a stone cold killer on everything up to an including elk! No iron sights. I have irons on my .375 but have never needed them-much more comfortable with scopes and I’ve not had one fail me. (Knocking on wood!)

I've taken a ton of game in the mountains of montana and wyoming with an original votex viper 4-16×42. That scope spent 7 years on a light weight 7mm rem mag and held zero longer than the barrel could! It now sits on my 7prc and I have successfully ran that combination to 1200 yards on steel. Lots of guys hate on vortex but I have beat on a lot of their optics and never had an issue.

Personally for western/mountain hunting I prefer something in the 3 power low end and 18 power top end with no more than a 44mm objective lens to save weight and bulk. You'll rarely if ever shoot on more than 12 power for good follow up shots but that higher end power is definitely nice for say an insurance shot or just picking out details before a shot.

I’m a big fan of the Leupold vx6 with tmoa reticle. They are probably the best lightweight scope out there and have the magnification that I like over the vx5. For my eyes it seems to have the best eye relief and forgiveness of the eye box where I can get onto the scope and it lines up great for me. i prefer the 4x24 only because I regularly shoot to 800-900 yards and that extra magnification is great for that but the 3x18 would weigh even less. I’ve tried a bunch of other scopes over the years and never really liked much else. They were either too heavy like nightforce or the reticle choices were trash. I don’t need a gazillion hash marks as I’m not a military sniper. I dial to what I need and do my best to hold for wind using the tmoa reticle. It’s a simple reticle but enough hash marks to be not obnoxious and still be useful to me.
