Would anyone here take a Savage 110 in 458 Win mag on a dangerous game hunt?

I’m a Mauser style action type of guy and I passed on it. It was $650 and I am wondering if I’ll regret it tonight laying in bed.

It was a plastic stock so I would have had to upgrade that. I would have bought it if it was wood.

I'm with @Brickman301. There are much more experienced members on here than Ol' Hedge. In general though, I only regret not buying rifles that are somehow special. I'm not saying just expensive or out of the norm. Also those crazy deals we are blessed enough to stumble upon. Remember when a new in cosmolene all matching SKS was $99? I regret not mowing more yards and buying five. I think you'll find your rifle that you really want and be happier for it. Good luck!

I have had two hunter’s arrive in camp over the years with Savage .458Win bolt guns, at first I was wary of them but both worked well on Buffalo, it’s a long time back but I thought at least one of them was a CFR, I’ll check & see if they made one ?

That I wouldn’t hesitate to take a push feed on a DG hunt as long as it fed and cycled properly. I have had more problems with CRF rifles than I have with any other type.

I know of two well regarded PH’s here that use PF Win Safaris in .458wm. Savage 110 isn’t an expensive rifle, but they’re accurate and work well.

Although I’d prefer a CRF rifle, I’ve never had any real issues with Savage rifles. For a one time hunt, I’d consider it. As far as push feed, think of how many Remington 700’s, Weatherby’s and other PF have taken DG.
If you decide to purchase it, put it thru its paces to make sure it feeds and functions well. Savages aren’t the smoothest actions.

I’d buy it for $650. Not many .458s around at that price. If you don’t like it after you’ve shot it a number of times, you could still probably recoup the cost you paid.

many push feed rifles are used on dangerous game,

Push feed rifles are almost exclusively used for combat these days.

A well timed CRF rifle is a beautiful thing, but it has to be built right to work right. A rifle either works or it doesnt, the action style doesnt matter. Savages are what they are but I havent shot one yet that didnt work well and shoot well. I wouldnt take one to africa without putting it through its paces, but a push feed rifle that works well > a crf rifle that isnt timed quite right.

I'd absolutely get in the car right now and drive to where ever that was in OK that had it for 650. Unless it was at Wanenmacher. Then I'll be SOL I suppose.

On my first safari, I shot a.buffalo that was not cooperative about dying. I got another round off as he stood facing us and he ran back into the mopane and acacia where he death bellowed. When we went in after him, the PH saw the bull still standing and took the shot. His rifle was one of the "in between years" push feed Winchester Model 70's in.458WM. He was then watching where the buffalo fell as he cycled the bolt. We.moved in to where the bull was down and he motioned for me wait while he went around and made the approach. At about ten feet the bull jumped to his feet and started for the PH. We both threw our rifles up and I heard that loud, hollow click of a firing pin falling on an empty chamber. Before the buffalo caught the PH, I broke his neck. The PH stood and fooled with his rifle, then closed the bolt and shot the now dead buffalo again. I asked what had happened and he told me that when he had cycled the bolt the rifle had failed to feed the next round up and he closed the bolt on an empty chamber. My rifle was a Controlled Round Feed commercial Mauser action. It did and does work perfectly. The PH used a Brno (CRF) in .375 H&H for the rest of.my safari. After that he got rid of the PF .458 and now carries a .450 Ackley Magnum with a CRF action.

I own several PF rifles and like them but I am not going to hunt DG with them. I would not buy a Savage 110 in .458. Something can go wrong with anything built with human hands but I believe CRF comes closer to infallible when a single problem can lead to someone getting hurt, or worse.

The U.S. Military didn’t think CFR was overwhelmingly important

The reality is its far easier to make a push feed rifle reliable than a CRF rifle. Making a CRF rifle run right takes some vudoo. Making a push feed rifle run right is comparatively a cake walk. All it takes is someone willing to run the bolt like it owes them money and a good extractor, and itll work.

As far as I know, every premium combat rifle fielded these days is a push feed design. Man is the most dangerous game.

the rifle had failed to feed the next round up and he closed the bolt on an empty chamber.

He probably short shucked it. A CRF rifle will do the same thing.

Those old military bolt actions have big nasty steel bolt stops because you are supposed to rack them like they stole something. The same applies to push feed rifles. Yours worked because you operated it correctly.

I had one of the savage 110 models with the on off muzzlebreak once .It was $350 and 6.75 pounds .I talked myself even out of fooling with it .It took two years to sell it and the 458 win super grade model 70 .I was going to load it to 4570 speeds but couldnt find brass or ammo .My 4 416s have kept me busy use to buy them for $600 even new super grade model 70s .I like the 416 ruger these days if I wanted a bigbore thats good and dependable .

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
