Ruger No. 1 Upgrades

Like already stated; change the recoil pad. I went with a limbsaver. The action and stock design make the N0.1 a pretty heavy kicker compared to a M70 or CZ550 chambered for the same cartridge.

So after a while of shooting this little rifle I am inclined to give up on the Limbsaver and look into fitting a Decelerator XLT. The Limbsaver just doesn't seem to be working as well to deaden the recoil. Of course I am using the newer Airtech model which also does quite a bit to detract from the aesthetics.

I assume it has open sights. Talley's work well, even with a heavy recoiling rifle. I don't take anything to Africa where a follow-up may be required on something hostile without an instantly dismountable scope.

Redleg, I don’t believe Talley makes a QD for the #1. Warner QD and Alaska Arms are the only options for the proprietary Ruger base?

If you're interested in making your own trigger (or having one made), I've gotten a dimensioned drawing I could share. The trigger on the No.1 is good but not, in my opinion, all that elegant (it also doesn't feel the best against the trigger finger...I'm a bit of a snob, that way, likely as a result of some of the better English work, and my first taste of a Dakota 76 many years ago).

Yep. You are correct. Warne or Alaska. Both of mine have Warne.

One of the serious limitations of the #1 is the location of the mounts on the quarter rib. Finding a scope that works is hard, longer LOP and it’s near impossible. I have begged Talley to make a quarter rib for the #1 to move the mounts back while allowing for Talley rings.

My Warne Permanently Attached rings took some serious torquing to grab hold of the quarter rib. I'm not concerned that they will go anywhere now, however it was annoying to have to crank them down so much.

My .450/400 NE 3 " got an adjustable peep sight....

Absolutely correct. A number one benefits tremendously from a long eye relief scope. Swaro Z6 1-6 EE, or Leupold VX3 2.5-8x are two that come to mind.

In rereading this thread, I have noticed that one person talked of a peep sight.

Did anyone ever change the open sights to something more useful while sticking to irons? I've got a .458 Lott now and I really don't want to go the scope route. The hard thing I am trying to find is the rear sight. Who makes a good fixed 3/8 dovetail rear sight?

Try NECG

NECG only sells a 16mm dovetail rear. They did not do the boddingtons. Ruger apparently did them in house. I am going to try Ruger, but I fear I will receive the answer of, "We can't sell you that part," as with the Montado hammers and such.

I put a NECG receiver peep on my No1 (9.3x62).

I have a NECG peep for my #1 .458 Lott. It mounts in to the Ruger scope base slot. There are a couple of things about this that aren’t bad but could be better.
First the elevation is adjusted by loosening the aperture, sliding it to where you want and tightening.
Second, the hole in the aperture is somewhat small and does not provide a wide field of view or let in a lot of light. However, if you remove the aperture to create a “ghost ring”, the first issue comes into play and the ghost ring just slides freely. A “fix” to this would be to sight in and devise a way to lock the slide in place, then remove the aperture.
The third is that you need to tighten the screw to hold it in place like a standard Ruger scope ring, so a screwdriver or coin is required to secure it. Not quick.

My buddy put a skinner peep sight on his 458 #1. It works well but could be tougher IMO.
I use a Skinner on my No.1 .458 Win Mag also. I had to swap out the front sight as it was too low even with the factory irons. My No.1 in 375 H&H had a taller one that worked perfectly and since it has an old Weaver K3 on it I put the shorter one from the .458 on it.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
