Just sold off my 700 project and ordered a Savage hog hunter in 308. Should be in Wednesday. I already picked up a Nikon 3-9x40. The remaining purchase is the rings and bases. Not looking for anything crazy but this gun will get dragged through the swamp and in/out of the car so want a solid set up.

Thanks for any help/advice! This is my first 308 so any tips on off the shelf ammo is appreciated:)

I advise a one piece picatinny base with quick release scope rings. JB weld and red thread lock the screws to the scope base and the receiver and make it permanent.

YMMV :)

Shelf ammo, federal blue box.

So easy to reload you should learn, it will change your accuracy for the better.

I mount scopes for a living and would never recommend JB Weld or Red Loctite. Blue or Purple Loctite on the base screws and nothing on the ring screws.

I use Warne rings on my firearms most of the time, permanent and QD. I used to use Warne two piece bases but have recently changed over to EGW bases. They cost quite a bit less than Warne picatinny bases and seem just as good to me. You can get EGW bases with Allan or Torx head screws, get Torx. There are numerous ring and base systems that are excellent such as Leupold, Talley, DNZ and Burris. They all work well and if I bought a rifle that already had one of them on then I would not replace them.

Weaver rings work great but I don't like them because it is a pain to level the reticle with them.

I ended up getting DNZ one piece mounts. Seem very good quality

I agree with everything written here - the Loctite, the choice of rings, screws and the Weaver rings being good but somehow usually more PITA. In general I like the 2 piece bases and QD rings on hunting rifles but use the 1 piece ones on target rifles.

Just curious, why nothing on the ring screws?

I know on the last few sets of ring that I have purchased that the screws for the rings came with dry blue Loctite on them.

Because it isn't needed and can cause you to strip the screw heads when trying to remove them. The dry loctite that comes on screws(I first noticed it on Leupold), doesn't grip as tight as the liquid in my experience.

I prefer the look of two piece bases. With scope tube lengths all over board these days, it is a crap shoot sometimes even with extended two piece bases. That's why I went with one piece picatinny's. Didn't replace existing ones, just started using them on new mounts.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
