Qatar via Doha to JNB. Any recent experience?

Hi, Folks.

Looking at Qatar for JFK, Doha, JNB, PE with rifle, supressor, and ammo.

I'll be using a rifle service in JNB and will contact airlink in advance to book rifle on the plane.

Wondering if anyone has done this route recently and might be able to advise on any of the below?

1 - Is 1hr 25 mins in Doha ok?
2 - How are Qatar with the rifle? Any recent experience specific to Qatar Airways would be great.
3 - How are Qatar with ammo?
4 - Has anyone done this with a supressor? Any additional info on new paperwork requirements for this would be much appreciated, too.

Are you asking about 1 hour and :25 layover? If so, it’s very dependent on the time of day. 5 PM - 9 PM and 11:00PM to 03:00 AM are peak times. And the bus loading docks are very busy.

Imagine the jet arriving, taxing to the tarmac, disembarking, waiting on a bus, getting back to the terminal, getting through security and then waiting at the terminal for another bus taking you to your plane and getting on the plane.

that’s a lot to pack into an hour and 20 minutes.

Once you check in with Qatar airways in US you don’t touch your rifle or ammo again until it reaches final destination. It can take longer than other airlines to check in your rifle in US, but once they have it it will arrive where it’s going. Same on way back.

I’d be concerned about a couple things. 1.5 hours is a very short layover on an international flight. Are suppressors legal in New York State and New York City to check them in? Is Qatar airspace fully reopen? I’d wait until Iran conflict concludes. I took opportunity to cancel and book on different airline for my end of March flight this year.

Have done that path a few time although last time was more than a year ago. At that time Qatar was great with ammo and guns. I did not have a silencer. They did not weigh the ammo separately but you should expect that Airlink will at Jambo. 1.5 is enough time so long as everything goes as planned. And you are not delayed getting there etc.

FWIW. I travel every day for work and am concierge key on American. I still use Jennifer Gin at Travel Express because she keeps track of all the latest gun requirements for each airline and makes sure all your paperwork is perfect and she is on call 24/7 if you have any travel snafus that need to be fixed while em route. I think I pay her 150$ to book each trip and all the paperwork and knowledge and emergency changes are included.

You can certainly do that layover with 1 1/2 hour, but I would not do it.

There is also an airport hotel you can stay at without clearing security / customs that is reasonable priced and the Qatar lounge is nice. So if you opt for the longer layover it is relatively easy time at Doha airport

I wouldn’t hesitate to go via Qatar or UAE normally, but I think I’ll wait until things calm down in the gulf. A late flight or a missed connection is one thing. Getting stuck there during a month-long flight suspension is another.

Do NOT move a suppressor through any state where they’re not legal to own. It might be no big deal, or you might be charged with a felony.

Last year April -June 2025 was my latest flights on Qatar, and I had Emma at Gracy Travel for my agent. She was great at getting my flights arranged and pre approved rifle permits. Gracy's Concierge service at JNB was great also.

I fly Qatar out of Dulles in DC.
They see my gun case, ask me by my name, pull me out of line 10 to 15 minutes check in verifying and making sure all of my paperwork is complete including for JNB and Airlink to my final destination. If anything seems remotely questionable we take care of it right there. Great people working at Qatar Airlines in DC and the one's I also encountered in Doha and JNB.

The 1.5 hour layover may be rushing things. Not sure if they have the other part of the airport facilities open yet. They were still doing a lot of construction work on it back in April 2025 when I last traveled through Doha. If it's complete think Atlanta Airport.

Plus one on the travel restrictions/bans with the fighting going on in the Mideast. You may want to have a plan B just in case Murphy('s Law) wants to mess with you at the last minute.

Qatar is great with guns. I don’t know about a suppressor.

Using a travel agent can help with the gun angle. Like another I fly over 100k miles a year on American and have for 20 years. But I use and agent for international flights with a gun.

As for the Iran situation I’m booked through Doha in late July. I’ve been monitoring the flights and they’ve been going on schedule the last three weeks. That could change but I’m betting on no escalation.

FWIW: I drive to DC to catch the 9:20pm flight DC to Doha, arrive Doha with a 3.5 to 4 hour layover. Sorry don't remember the Doha to Johannesburg departure time but the flight arrives at JNB around 4:30 - 5:00am then it depends on where I'm going to and whom I'm hunting with first.

Going directly to the EastCape; I catch the first morning Airlink flight to East London or Port Elizabeth arriving in the East Cape between noon and 1 or 2pm. No overnight in Johannesburg.

I was told in January, February, and March that since my last flight was operated by Airlink that I would not be allowed to transport firearms on Qatar. They kept telling me to call back in case the rule changed. I ended up renting a rifle. I had heard great things about Qatar but that left a bad taste. We bought tickets January 6th and the rule changed January 1st and there was no warning when adding a leg not operated by Qatar. It all doesn’t make sense because I understood that I would have to check my rifle in JNB anyway.

As far as safety. Doha was very quiet and the attendants in the Business lounge were very friendly and willing to help at every move.

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't heard of this change.

I don't mean to derail the OP, but it would be nice to know what other options the OP and us others that have to use Airlink to get to our final destination in RSA. What other airlines are licensed and offers hunters' with firearms commuter flights within RSA?

I’m confident that Airlink can carry firearms. It was a Qatar airways problem. Multiple travel agents at DSC said they had found out about Qatar’s change and had people in the field when it happened.

Haha “a story”… Brother, I lived that story. I’m a rifle guy through and through. I’m left handed. I really wanted to take my own rifle. I ended up with a right handed hill country rifle in 300WM with a swaro scope and a great fryer and devick suppressor, but I would have rather had my Blaser. I’m not making a story just answering the OP in my VERY recent experience

I don’t know the exact situation with Airlink but Qatar charged their policy early this year. If you fly with firearms on Qatar it needs to be booked 100% on Qatar flights no partner airlines. You need to book a separate itinerary now to Qatar hubs if you want to travel with firearms with them. I use to be able to book one ticket using American as a partner and just recheck the rifles on first Qatar flight. You can still do that if not traveling with firearms, but if you are traveling with firearms it needs to be a separate ticket on whichever airline you choose to get to that hub with your rifle. I’m assuming it’s the same situation to reach Johannesburg with Airlink. Just needs to be a completely separate ticket not connected to the Qatar reservation.

I should have worded my question better .
I was just looking for confirmation, As I think Airlink is the only, inside RSA, government licensed airline for travelers'/ hunters to use when importing/ exporting firearms; Since South African Airways or Airlines hard to keep them straight, was going through /coming out of bankruptcy and stopped flying a lot of their RSA commuter and international flights.

There was mentioned of a rival to Airlink applying for a license to fly hunters with weapons, however the last mentioned here on the forum, (I think it was), that rival airline went anti hunter.

I read the threads on that and would have no problems doing it. But that's where having a informed travel agent comes in handy. They will know just what you need to do.

I have no problems following the airlines rules as long as I know what they are ahead of my flights.
