I was in my favorite gun shop today and saw a 1958 Winchester Model 70 Featherlight in a .30-06 caliber for sale. The gun shouldered nicely and seemed solid. The question is, would this be a good light plains game rifle? Is there any issue shooting "modern" ammo in these guns. Just not that familiar with them although I've heard they were very well built.

Thanks for any advice you can share!

Will be fine for PG.

It will handle anything you put in it

Very good old rifles.

I have only two words to say to you. BUY IT!!! Unless you are willing to pay 10K for a Custom job, the pre 64 Mod 70s are as good as they get. Maybe I should qualify my comment somewhat by saying that I recently saw a similar rifle on Gunbroker that sold for $1050, sans scope and rings. To answer another of your questions that old model 70 will gladly digest any commercially loaded 30-06 ammo. BTW it is perfect for PG animals.

You can't buy any better factory made American Rifle - a true classic
Of course we all expect to see pictures of it when you get it home...

Great rifles, if it has a good price tag pick it up and get some pictures loaded!
