It’s pretty mind blowing when one actually takes the time to stop and think of the real world effects on topography glaciation had during the ice age.

I will admit I know nothing about corn other than the fact it’s good silage in my area, and my parents talk about 300 bushel an acre number from their American snowbird friends. We were canola and wheat farmers mostly.

I still say $60k is the amount he “chooses” to pay himself because that’s all he really needs and is either paying down his land as quickly as he can (essentially supercharging his retirement plan), or leaving the money in the business to shelter it from income tax.

So are you ready to jump in and take over such a deal when your folks pass away. a golden parachute for sure up at 5 to bed at 9 , 7 days aweek?

I got a good laugh from @Big_Easy post! Old man? Haha. I just turned 30-30 (60) is the joke in our family. As good as two 30 year-olds. I climb mountains chasing elk, moose and sheep for a living and I’m quite certain good ole @Big Easy isn’t going to beat me to the top anytime soon. As for @Altitude sickness post in my defense, I appreciate it, Brother, but I’m a lover not a fighter!

Honestly I wish I did. When I was going to transition into a life on the farm my real job got in the way. Busy/mandatory shutdowns always happen to be during seeding/harvest. And then life happened and I can guarantee my wife wouldn’t have moved back to my hometown.

But yeah, I’d love to be getting the swather ready right now as opposed to sitting in an oil plant five hours from my home. Yes, yes I know swathing is all but extinct in 2026

This whining about being at sea too long is getting ridiculous. These guys have air conditioning, good food and good work.

Yes it’s tough, yes it’s long hours, noisy, dangerous. But compared to the U.S. Marines or Army it’s a luxury cruise.

Years from now when they are displaying their N.U.C. Or P.U.C. I hope they remember to tell how much they whined.

People often forget that a lynch mob is democratic. “Majority rules” is just as prone to evil as it is to good, as history demonstrates with alarming regularity.

That’s why a generally democratic system with checks and balances and safeguards for minority political groups/positions is so crucial.

Man 300 bushel an acre is incredible! I’ve seen the farmers that do the contest plots hit those numbers and higher my buddy told me of a farmer in Va that won with a 500bushel/acre. Those guys are master farmers

I doubt I could breathe at 11000 ft , I can see the ocean from my front windows, and right about 30ft above sea level. The highest point on mainland n.s. Is only 1502 ft.

Do you guys that travel hunt into the mountains have to take time to acclimatize ?

The first day is brutal. The next couple arent great. But I do a ton of time on the stairmaster, so usually just takes a little longer to catch your breath. But definitely huffing and puffing.

I know plenty about how unprofitable farming typically is. That's why my fathers family sold their's off and never looked back. My comment was factually correct. The original post was not. The max exemption is still $30 million. The USDA estimated in 2022 that only 87 farms pay any amount of estate tax in any given year. A farm valued at $2-6 million is not going to be paying a 50% estate tax, or any tax for that matter.

Your assumption precludes the possibility of purchasing a smaller farm, or the idea that they even still want to be farmers.

Nobody is forcing them to choose that profession. In America, one has the agency to choose their profession.

I never opined about the labor costs, nor the profitability of a hypothetical farm operation. The post and reply were about taxation.

If you own a $68 Million farm, you would be in the top 0.1% of net worth nationally, higher than 99.9% of the entire country, and 99.99% internationally.

That may be true, but they will not have the cash for the tax bill. Land rich, dirt poor. Conveniently, you don’t account for that.

Yes, you can reduce the value by the use of a Family Limited Partnership, put some property in an irrevocable trust up to the exemption. But in the end, the estate tax is still going to hit them and not have the cash to pay the bill and have to sell property.

If that have the cash flow to purchase life insurance to cover the tax, then they might be able to keep the family farm/ranch.

We still had flight engineers when I got hired at the airline. One night at dinner, the captain (Army) said “oh good, bread”, the first officer (Navy) asked “is it warm?”, and I (Air Force), the flight engineer, asked “is it seven grain bread?”

The captain picked up on it right away and had a good laugh.
