Politics

I think lots of the disconnect from reality is the elder statesmen of our society had been trained to believe main stream media as the gospel of what is actually happening.

The constant intake of "the sky is falling" news put forth by the MSM has led to severe cognitive dissonance amongst the elderly population that desperately want to believe they are as virtuous as they portrayed themselves in their youth.

It bleeds, it leads.

But the "sky if falling" approach is working, both for the MSM, those on the political left and, even more so, for the MAGA movement.

Look at the MAGA rhetoric. This is a "rebellion", that is an "invasion", they are sending us rapists and murders, this city is burning. Or Elon Musk saying "A seemingly small election could determine the fate of Western civilization" or England is heading for a civil war. Or their use of the term "terrorism" or "terrorist" for anything they don't like. Or "I am your retribution." Retribution for what? For living in one of the best countries in the world?

Both sides use fear to motivate people. It's dishonest, unhealthy, and destructive.

Now I am very found of Reagan, so I am not using him as an example because of the current controversy, but guys like Reagan, and even Obama promised to make things better and appealed to people's better aspirations and emotions to gain their support. Even both Bush Presidents were pretty good at that.

Both Trump and Biden turned to a more fear based approach. They stopped promising to deliver more "virtue" or "progress" but promised to save you from a very evil fate or person, or even more dangerously, evil group.

It's working, but I don't think it is leading anywhere good.

I was actually thinking of Saul recently due to Frostbite’s comments. I know he was concerned about the rise of anti Semitic and anti Zionist feelings among the political left.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen him post since early this year.
Probably ashamed to admit he has finally become a conservative?

All I can offer in rebuttal are the words of "ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN TRUMP!!!!!" that was screamed to the high heavens in 2020.

Look how that mindset worked out for everyone.

I still believe the boomer/geriatric protests we are seeing by the left is mainly due to the left wanting to have the same kingly power they are protesting against.

Example - Pelosi has been in office for 37 years and her echo chamber of a district has kept her there, no body under the age of 70 with any common sense can say a word because the elder swamp hags of their party suck all the oxygen out of the room any time they open their mouths.

I don't see that as a rebuttal since I said that both Trump and Biden used that approach. As far as I could tell the only thing Biden ran on was "Be afraid of Trump." Totally negative campaigning and no way to set policy.

But right now the Democrats are in the wilderness and the party in power is not only campaigning through fear but governing through fear. It's bad.

It is a bad thing when any powerful group or party fear mongers only to gain power, it is even worse when someone uses the mechanisms of the government for that purpose. It magnifies the negative impact.

Another good example of this problem is Canadian gun laws. The Liberals used an exaggerated fear of crime to put in place brutally repressive and ineffective gun restrictions. A governing party causes way more damage with dishonest fear politics than an opposition group does.

Well..........let's not forget that it sort of morphs into actual lies.

I have never seen a lie from CNN--if they get something wrong they make it a point to retract it--otherwise they get sued.

Not so the politicians and both sides do it.........although Trump has made it a fine art.

Now........."Invasion" as used about the Mexican border CAN have different meanings.

I can see how a bunch of illegal aliens can be called an invasion.

Grasshoppers can be called an invasion.

But a city burning? With not a bit of smoke in the air?

Trump says "Portland is burning."

I say, "I don't see any smoke."

He says, "I don't care. My emotions tell me Portland is burning."

He wants to send the National Guard.

Seems to me that some of America's least educated may actually believe that the city of Portland is on fire without any smoke and we need to send the National Guard to save the city.

But..........it's a lie.

Perhaps rebuttal was a poor choice of word - substitute comparison

I don't see Trump as fear mongering, he's doing what he said he would do and that's what got him elected, we had very serious issues at the border that were 100% the fault of failed policy designed to give the party in power congressional majority.... Just like they have enjoyed in the state of California ever since Reagan gave 6mil illegals amnesty - I do not see Reagan as the messiah and think he should have been slapped for signing that amnesty.

The real fear mongering coming from the left with their eternal "Nazi, fascist, king, blah, blah, blah"... Their simply motivating people to make emotional decisions, which I believe we can all agree emotional decisions are often bad ones.

As for the Canadian gun control laws - I agree, the fear mongering and lies have led to gun laws for Canada that are going the way of Australia if not worse; all brought on by politicians appealing to the masses emotional decision making as they did in Australia after the 1996 shooting; as the British are trying to do now with the "Ban pointed knives to stop stabbings!" idiocy that we are seeing across the pond and that same leftist idiocy is the cause for the shameful immigration crisis seen all over Europe.

I didn't see Trump stating the end of democracy will be upon us if Harris was elected, but I honestly believe that would have been the result if another 10+ million people were allowed to come across the border and set up shop.

Just look at Minnesota - 80% of the Somali immigrants in that state are un employed or under employed, immigration fraud is massive and now you have a host of elected officials from that same community.

I was actually thinking of Saul recently due to Frostbite’s comments. I know he was concerned about the rise of anti Semitic and anti Zionist feelings among the political left.
He's probably an educated man who is aware that protesting mass murder and ethnic cleansing is not antisemitism--it's anti war crimes.

Yeah because it wasn't burning during the summer of "love"

Bottom line - No excuse for attacking federal building when they are deporting illegal migrants and as stated in my previous post...... Look how your mindset has worked out for Minnesota.

Trump said it's burning now.

That's a lie. I note the lack of smoke.

What is this "mindset" of which you speak?

Did you just contribute another lie?

As in Trump declaring people who disagree with him "terrorists" and "America-haters."

As in Hitler declaring Jews enemies of the other German people.

Is there really any difference?

Would Trump like to see his Proud Boys and Oathkeepers rounding up some of these terrorists and America-haters?

A while back he told them to "Stand by."

I wonder what they're standing by for?

I think the only person lying on this forum is you... and you're lying to yourself with self imposed moral superiority, it's ok though - I'm not hear to hurt you, I'm hear to help!

Ok, here is the burning to the ground clip you so much love to quote....

He's speaking figuratively, by burning to the ground he means that its a shit hole that is only getting worse.

Does there really need to be flames and smoke?..... or is the massive drug overdoses, criminal gangs and "protestors" attacking federal agents meet the burden of a shit show situation?

Seriously, when you hear someone say "it's a dumpster fire" do you actually believe there is a trash cart burning????

So we'll both agree that Portland is not literally burning - That is a fact.

It's just filled with illegal aliens that need to be deported and no amount of leftist propaganda or masked paint throwing anarchists are going to stop the feds from deporting them.

I mean if your being so webster dictionary literal about "burning to the ground", then what about the "summer of love".....?

Minneapolis

Portland

Seattle

San Francisco

All bastions of the ideals of leftist ideology and all of them soundly agree with your view of the world.

Gun laws in Australia, Canada and the U.S. have the same problems.

Mostly urban population overwhelming rural population.

This is the number one problem for all of us.........and I don't see how we fight it.

Instantly you will feel stress melting away, and moronic arguments evaporate as if they never existed. ;)

LOL!

I have never seen a city burn to the ground without flames and smoke.

I guess you have.

Why don't you just wave a white flag?

Seriously?

Explain this "view of the world" that I have.

I'd love to hear your theory.

I think we are probably very close to being on the same page on this issue.

I suggest that hyperbolic and dishonest fear mongering leads to hard-to-repair civic divisions and bad policy. It was bad when Biden did it, and it is bad now Trump is going with it.

People tend to treat politics like a football game. They cheer relentlessly for their "team" and disparage the other team no matter what. They forget that, most of the time, they are on the same team and hoping for a good result for the country. The political discourse should be more like bitching about the play-calling than hating on say...The Cowboys.

And while Reagan was not the messiah, I often refer to him only half jokingly as "St. Ronald."

He's speaking figuratively, by burning to the ground he means that its a shit hole that is only getting worse.
Ok..........figuratively.

Sure.

Like when he says he has solved and fixed inflation.

And inflation is worse.

Average grocery prices rose 0.3% from August to September, according to Consumer Price Index figures released Friday. That increase followed a 0.6% jump from July to August, which was the biggest month-to-month jump in three years.

So by figuratively saying he's solved it he is really saying he made it into a "shit show and it's only getting worse?"

Am I getting it now?
