A few weeks ago I attended an auction and picked up this very nice, un-molested 30-06 Sedgley Springfield Sporter. This is a somewhat scarce model because it has a cheek piece, which was special order only, and it has the Sedgley “Speed Lock”. I have a real soft spot for classic pre-war sporters.
And now the story. Back in the mid ‘80s, I received several rifles that had been my uncles. One of those rifles was a 30-06 Sedgley. Being obviously much younger, and not yet truly wise to the allure of classic rifles I traded it a few year after I received it for a nice early S&W Model 27. Not a terrible trade value wise at the time (and I still have the 27), but as the years passed and I grew wiser, I began to regret that I had traded the Sedgley away.
So when I was reviewing the auction catalog and noticed the Sedgley I thought this was a great opportunity to replace the one I had traded away so many years ago. But as I read the description and looked at the pictures I noted that it had burn mark on the stock, then I remembered that my uncle’s rifle also had a similar burn mark on the stock.
I guess it’s possible for two Sedgleys to be out there with similar burn marks, but as far as I’m concerned this was my uncle’s rifle, and that made it doubly pleasing to add this one to the collection.
