As I stumble my way through these intense early days of double rifle affliction, I ended up with an interesting find. This leather take-down case that’s embossed Heym and serialized to the rifle I acquired with it.
The rifle is an unfired 89b in 450/400. Pretty standard build with grade 1 engraving, 26” barrels, nice upgraded wood but not highly figured. The gent ordered the rifle at the DSC expo in Dallas back beginning of 2017, as he was all fired up about Africa and only a few months away from a leopard hunt. Made that trip, but never went back for Buffalo which was the reason he ordered the 450/400…so it sat unfired in a safe after arriving…until now.
When listed, the ad was overly vague, largely mimicking the 89b generic information and several folks, myself included, were worried as a new seller with poor photos and generic description, it sounded quite potentially as a scam. Several correspondence and phone calls later, I was assured things were legit and seller was accommodating things to help provide assurances. What was nice in addition to some flexibility on price was he then mentioned having a bit of ammo and a sling for it.
After some digging, turned out he had a Doctor red-dot optic with Heym mount, custom Americase ammo box, 6-boxes of factory ammo, Trader Keith sling, and a Murray culling belt, which he tossed into the deal at the slightly discounted price.
Then after our deal was settled, he mentioned his wife asked what he intended to do with the leather case for the rifle. He’d totally forgotten about it altogether and wanted to let me know he also included it and to expect it. I wasn’t expecting it to be so darn nice, and not sure I’ve ever even seen a photo of one before. Once in hand I had to reach out to ask more about it, thinking maybe Murray made it and branded/serialized it to the gun but he said he ordered it with the rifle and it came in with the gun when it was completed. Regardless, it appears high quality, thick sturdy saddle leather and has nice soft fleece interior. Super nice bonus and kind surprise.
One additional benefit about double rifles…at least my experience thus far…their owners. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some outstanding people through this affliction.
Cheers.
