Has anyone specifically used a North Fork Cup point solid on a Cape buffalo?

With the 9.3x62 legal in Zim I am thinking of the best bullet to optimize that cartridge and based on previous reports I have heard of it’s good performance

For those who have used the 9.3x62 on buff what bullet do you recommend?

Great bullet. I’ve used NF Cup as second shot to 286g Barnes X, on two buffalo, with the 9.3x62. One bull dead after first Barnes X, but put NF in as insurance. Second buff went into thick stuff where NF bullet was the finisher. I’ve had super results with the NF Cup in .375HH and .404J, as well. The NF bullet makes a tad light caliber hit like its larger cousins (.45 Calibers and up).

Would you recommend it for my situation? Would it be the “best” bullet for a first shot?

Did you find the bullets after the shot?

I've not used the CPS as a first shot, I have a bunch loaded up as second shots for my .470NE double. That said if I messed up and shot the left barrel first with a CPS loaded in it, I don't think I'd be too concerned. The right barrel will have a NF soft.

Here's my take on the two bullets. The soft will give you better expansion than the CPS, thus in theory cutting a wider wound channel, but it may not penetrate as far as the CPS.

The CPS with its quasi hollow point design results in a massive wound channel in those first few inches. However with its lesser expansion will penetrate further and it wouldn't surprise me if it exited on a broadside shot at a buffalo.

So which is better? Damn hard to say, but I wouldn't sweat it one way or the other. Hunt with confidence using that bullet, but do be aware of buffalo or other critters being behind your targeted bull if you use the CPS.

I think you would be just fine with that cup point as your first shot. It would give you a little insurance if the angle was a little less than desired. It creates a pretty good wound channel for a solid. Pair that with some of the semi spritzer in the same 286 grain and you have a great plains game load ready to go.

With the 9.3x62 m “under gunned” for buffalo I’m thinking the extra penetration would be welcomed? Needed?

You are never under gunned on buff with the 9.3x62…if anyone tells you that they do not know what they are talking about. The 286 grain Barnes TSX is more than enough medicine for buff

Not a good choice. The Bullet will likely exit. Rather use a soft, Swift A frame would be my choice, TSX may also overpenetrate. 9,3 x 62 has plenty of penetration. I would also add that a 9,3 is not legal in zimbabwe with any current factory ammo. Energy does not make the minimum requirements. You would need some pretty hot handloads to make it legal.

It is capable of buffalo, no question but not strictly legal.

9.3 x62 and x74R is legal always trough derogative law in zimbabwe ... this will be like in gvt hunting land.Out of those ones ,no caliber and energy limit in Zim.and then who will bring a cronograph in campsite?
U can reload 250 grs solid or soft premium bullet at 2650 fps and u will get your desired energy of 3850 foot pounds

My first choice for your requirements would be a swift Aframe as the soft followed by the CPS.

second choice would be the Northfork 286gr soft and CPS.

Third choice the Barnes TSX and CPS.

Depends on the situation I guess, in a run away situation or for first shot at over 60 yards probably Yes. In a closed charge situation, you are aiming at the neurosystem, or thereabout to instantly stop the charge in which case deep penetration may not be a boone.

@wildwilderness
As the 9.3 and the Whelen are 2 peas in a pod I would use a 286 gn northforks soft follows by cps or a nice 320 gn Woodleigh RNSP and solids.
But that's me and I will never afford a buffalo hunt

320 grain RNSN Woodleighs are my go to for buffalo with the 9.3x62
@Aussie_Hunter
Unfortunately missed my chance on scrub bull because the property was sold
Was ready with the Whelen loaded with 310 gn Woodleigh RNSP and solids at over 2,400 fps. Would have done the job admirably in my book

That is perfect scrub bull medicine!

Hi SStomcat,

Agree! to me, your words "In a closed charge situation, you are aiming at the neurosystem, or thereabout to instantly stop the charge...", are a perfect "hit in the nail". To stop instantly a charge there are no other way...is IMPERATIVE!!
That´s why the late "ganyana" preferred his 9,3x62. He said he was able to put a perfect shot with it than with anything else.
This is, of course, the eternal debate...
