We’re still waiting for her custom Mauser in 6x47 Lapua to be finished. After 2 1/2 years, she’s tired of waiting. I just made a deal for this 1955 Model 70 in .243 Winchester. The LOP will be shortened because she is 4’ 11” tall. I may look for aftermarket bottom metal. It will get a Swarovski 8x56 scope.

Great choice on the rifle!

Good Heavens! Run! Run for your life before @Bob Nelson 35Whelen finds you! He’s planning a holocaust for .243 Winchester users.

On a more serious note, heartiest congratulations to Mrs. Lee. I’ve taken all of my African Tiny Ten with a .243 Winchester. And also four European roe deer. Absolutely beautiful little cartridge. And pre 1964 Winchester Model 70 is as good as it gets.

Nice rifle but you should have got it 250 Savage instead of 243. May be harder to source ammo bit a far better cartridge especially hand loaded with 117grain SST.
Bob.

I have an offer to trade for a shortened stock. I plan to do that. It’s already modified, so no harm if it needs to be shortened a tiny bit more. I do plan to look for an aftermarket stock, though. She likes the Maple that’s on her Mauser, so I may go that route. It will be up to Mom. The pics are her Mauser stock. It’s an FN commercial Mauser with a Bartlein barrel in 6x47 Lapua.

Dont cut that stock! Its a pre 64 model 70 stock and worth some money and once cut the value plummets. Whether bought to be used or for collecting or what ever....no need to cut it down as by the time you do all that and put a pad on it you can get a B&C hunting stock with recoil pad for around $100-$150 you just need to call them direct or look at website direct and then just shop around as there will be LOTS of deals out there as its a pre 64 model 70 short action so lots of options made for that rifle. Once you molest it its ruined forever...long after she is done using it, it will be ruined and not near what it could be worth for collecting values.

Buy another stock and leave it unmolested, especially since she is getting a custom done and will have that sooner then later. Just my opinion but i hate to see people take a pre 64 winchester model 70 or any other classic rifle and molest it for ever for short term satisfaction! LOL!

Ill buy it from you and get you a 243 with a shorter stock even! LOL!

Again, just my opinion...but PLEASE...DONT DO IT!!!!!!o_O:ROFLMAO::p

Sorry about panic post! LOLOLOLOL!!!! Didnt read the rest of the listings before i started hammering keys! LOL! Fantastic idea to keep the the rifle unmolested and just change out stock and save original stock. My sons both started on pre 64 270 winchesters and i put on B&C stocks that had shorter LOP's and then when they grew up they had standard stocks to put back on and rifles are still in unmolested condition. Once they are altered they are toast forever and really, they are going to be around a lot longer then we are so keep em real/whole.

Custom stock maker.com does some good work. Buddy has one of Roberts stocks and its beautiful. To find a short action pre 64 model 70 stock should be quite easy and might even find one ready to go.
Good luck with it and glad to hear you are keeping the rifle whole as you could buy a remington 700 BDL or BDL mountain rifle or Remington model 7 to get shorter LOP without ruining a pre 64 winchester! LOL!

Just looked on line and ebay of all places had quite a few different stock that fit it. Wood and synthetic...also had a few that were already shortened that people must have used for short term use like i did for my sons and then resold the stocks after they were grown. You might get lucky and find a dandy ready to go already so she doesnt have to wait too long.

THere is a pre 64 short action on ebay that has a chip just in front of the recoil pad for $100 OR BEST offer. You could cut that down since it has the chip anyway and it will still have the classic pre 64 look...IF she likes that original look. Cut it and put a pad on it.

This place has real model 70 stocks of all shapes and sizes and they are all restored and reasonably priced. I was shocked to see the prices for these nice restored stocks!!! He can shorten one if he doesnt already have one ready to go. Check em out for sure as they are all nice wood stocks....

ebay stuff..........

ALSO, another pre 64 looks like short action custom you could cut down if too long...$130 OBO.

really nice one that has already been shortened an inch or so...
