Minimum stopping round?

Maybe 4, the Jeff is only 0.8mm wider than the 338, but I think 3 would be the minimum.
Upside is that they do 10 round 338 lap mag magazines....

o_O.....a 10 round 500 mag...thats one way of doubling your rifles weight...:D . making the 500 jeff feed and the rebated rim make it harder to get it working correctly. dont think you would be disappointed with the lott.....

The rebated rim does put me off. I'd rather a 505 but no way can I make one fit! Hmmmm 495 Short A-Square would fit, belt is annoying but I'd rather that to rebated.

I'm making this trickier than it has to be. If I can get 338 lap mag magazines then 458 Lap Mag seems a sensible way forward. PTG even list a reamer.

Detachable mag for DG rifle is a bad idea. And 458 WM or Lott would smash the hypothetical old PH's shoulder to bits if all he can take is the lower end of the 400's.

Detachable mag is only a bad idea if the catch is suspect.

Regards the cartridges, yeah this thread has moved somewhat from that old PH hahaha fully agree that this mythical creature shouldn't have a Lott on his shopping list.

He should call it a day in all honesty. I've seen mags drop out of big cals a few times and at critical points in battle. All I can say is thank god for belt fed arms!!:W Cal 50:

Shame its a bit of a job getting a 30mm on a landy mate

Belay my last, they stock Aden cannon.

What about soft skinned dangerous game? Lion, leopard, big bears etc. Do opinions change significantly?

I'd never have a detachable mag on a DG rifle I even pin the hinged floors plated ones shut so I can't open at the wrong time.

I agree, wouldn't have considered one before but since it's my design and will be built from scratch I reckon I can find a way around it. All part of the challenge.

What a great point. Here is me pretty much stuck on buff and ele. I would imagine all the cartridges mentioned would still be very effective but with softs with maybe 416 being eve more relevant.

As a PH's rifle, i reckon a stopper would be any of the 458's and above.
Thats pretty much why they are made arent they?

The 404/416's with 450gr loads must be pretty decent as well, i liked shooting the 450gr solids from my 416.
I would still say though 458 and above as dedicated stopper.
@Thor Kirchner, didnt you use a 404 for quite a while?

No I have used a 458 Win as my backup gun. I have moved to a 500 NE now. Any of the above are very good stoppers. Many PH's use 375 as their backups but in this business bigger is better IF YOU CAN HANDLE IT WELL.

500 Jeff shoots a bigger round and out performs a 505 Gibbs. A Gibbs recoils more than a Jeff. There is also a 500 Jeff improved , which does not have the rebated rim. Not that the rebate is an issue any decent gunsmith can sort the feeding, if not he should not be a gunsmith working on DG rifles.

Of course rebated rims can be made to work but they're a compromise that simply isn't needed if the action is big enough. Their sole purpose was to allow a smaller bolt face. I just don't see the need to inject another headache in to the project.
The 500 Jeff Improved (and the 500 AHR) do indeed get rid of the rebated rim but brass is even harder to acquire.

500 Jeff does outperform the 505 but the 505 has a greater case capacity, at the same pressure it beats the Jeff. Plus it's very easy to build a 510 Gibbs if you want to go for .510" bullets.
It's irrelevant anyway as I won't be going Gibbs. Haven't ruled out the Jeff mind.

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
