Mauser Action Confusion?

View attachment 342803
This just popped up in a local store. .30-06, threaded re barrel with 6x18 Nikon scope. Says it’s a VZ 24?
CoElkHunter
If it's a vz24 at that price it's well worth it the scope alone is almost that price

I’ll go look at it tomorrow. The scope description says it’s a Nikon Buckmaster?

Both are military, but the Yugo is a little shorter.

Yugo, military karabiner based on mauser k98 design, is with shorter action, sufficient for 57 mm casing. (this rifle is designated as m48)
Comercial Yugo mauser, for hunting, known as m70 is with longer action. (standard action)

I’ve seen rifles here and elsewhere with Mauser actions chambered for much larger rounds than the 8mm Mauser

Regarding the case lenghts,
If you check the cartridge history, you will see that 9.3x62, 9.3x64, 8x68, all great German hunting cartridges are designed to fit on mauser 98 standard military action.
So, 98 can accommodate quite long cartridges

458 Win mag was made to fit standard winchester m70 long action, overall lengt of cartridge is 3.34''.

I think that this can be considered as maximum for today standard for cartridge length in bolt action mauser98 type rifles, which are not in magnum action size. (long actions)
I suppose that cartridges slightly longer that that, can still fit to long action today, but will need some adjustment and modification to fit in standard action length. (actually this is for gunsmiths to comment)

Well, I was wondering what larger bore cartridge I could fit into this .30-06 action. It appears a 9.3x62 length would work and the case rim diameters are close? If I went with one of the WM family of cartridges, the case length would work but then I’m thinking that the bolt face would have to be opened up to accommodate a .532 rim diameter vs. a .473 diameter? But then I was looking online at the cost of a barrel in a different caliber, plus gunsmithing work, so maybe it’s not cost effective?

Easy, just run a 300 win mag reamer into it and open the bolt face.
Option 2 a 275 Rigby stalking rife copy .

I went and looked at it today. It’s in really good shape, but has a blind magazine (no bottom metal)? And the “wing” style safety won’t work unless you used an extremely high set of bases?

I agree with Bruce moulds the safety catch is a cheap easy fix. The blind mag is a non issue, I prefer them, you c ant loose ammo or magazines .

bob,
you are a funny man.
I am tooled up with custom dies for a custom chamber.
not about to throw that expense away when I have a 7mm stw as well.

When you wear that 7mmSTW in 600 rounds mate then you can go to a barrel saving 280AI.
Cheers mate Bob.

bob,
I think I will rebarrel to something like 340 wby.
I have a couple of hundred 8mm rem cases here and might just get a reamer for 8mm rem mag necked straight up to 338.
this in the hope of getting more point blank range than the 9.3x64 out in the sandhill gountry on camels.
250 gn swift or barnes should in theory suit the job.
woodleighs might not stand the velocities.
the stw for specialized use has to be seen to be believed.
the trajectory for the killing power requires getting used to.
zero for 300 and aim dead on to 350.

I'm hearing you about trajectories mate my 25 is sighted 2 inches high at 100 yards zeros again at 275 and is only 10 inches low at 400. That's with the 115 grain nosler combined technology silver tip. With the 100gn Barnes ttsx it's even flatter.
It only problem is thinking game is further away then it is and shooting over it.
Now I just don't care about the range if it's over 300 a backline hold will do out to as far as I will ethically shoot.
Cheers mate Bob

Phillip I was reviewing some of the auctions online and saw your Nubian Ibex hunt coming up this weekend. It also showed you have Addax and Axis deer. Is there a website I can go to and see the lodge, cost of animals and what is available? Thanks Mark

I really like that knife you're selling. It looks so similar to my original 1306 that has been around a long time. I can't spend that much but if you get to a point where you'd entertain offers let me know. Thx, James
