This post could have been titled USE ALL THE GUNS ON HAND. The picture of the tiger was taken on an outpost of an area called Hill 10 along the Trace northwest of Da Nang. I was a member of the track amphibious units pictured. The team pictured killed it on ambush one night. The alternative title came in as the team opened up on the tiger in marine corp style with everything they had: rifles, machine guns, grenades and if I remember correctly a claymore mine may have been used. As one might guess the 7.65 was the most effective with penetration of the 5.56 not what one would want.

I rotated in to service on the hill shortly after this event happen but was shown a claw and the story was told to me by a team member in on the kill. They were not actually tiger hunting it just appeared in the kill zone. A helicopter was sent out for the animal and sent to the rear which I suspect was to examined for stomach contents. Everyone claimed the colonel wanted it for mounting or rug. He may have gotten it but without many claws.

This was heavily forested mountainous area that apparently held a heathy population of tigers at the time as we saw another leap across the trail in front of us during the day. Getting to see a tiger in the wild is quite an experience. A sight I will never forget.

There are numerous post on the internet of other tiger encounters but RATHER NOT INCLUDED THOSE WITH THIS POST. THANKS.
