Man dies after falling from tree stand

“Officials are investigating a fatal hunting related accident. It happened at about 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Officials with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said 70-year-old George Olivo of Reidsville was killed from the injuries he suffered when the tree stand he was in fell to the ground.

Olivo was transported to Cone Health where he died.

"As a hunter myself, of course you never want to hear about it, both in my personal life and work life. Again, it's something that could happen to any of us," said North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Officer Nathan Green.”

Sadly, there are a number of quadrapeligics an parapalegics in rehab centers that used to be deer hunters.........until they fell asleep or somehow came to fall out of their stand. There are also quite a few in the cemetery as well that used only a belt and ended up suffocating while waiting for someone to come and cut them down.

If you do hunt out of a tree stand, please use an approved safety harness; one that straps up under the crotch so as to not put pressure on your chest is the best.

Good advise. Thats why I dont hunt out of tree stands. Only ladder blinds and ground blinds.

Not the first tree stand accident. And, sadly, more than likely not the last. I'm hunting whitetail deer for the first time in November here in Virginia, and have made my fear of heights well known. I'm going to sit in a stand next month with a bow hunter to see how I can handle it. This should be fun.

Do you know if you are hunting out of elevated box blinds, ladder stands, climbing tree stands, etc.? I have a fear of heights myself, but found that the elevated box blinds weren't so bad......just getting in and out of them was a bit nerve-racking, esp. the really tall ones (this was a guided hunt in N.C. a few years ago). The one didn't have a door (blew off in a hurricane, or so I was told.....that made me nervous, but the ones that were enclosed weren't bad at all. Same with the ladder stands with the bars in the front......once I was in them, I was O.K......it was just getting there that was a bit sketchy. One problem I did have was shooting towards my right (I'm right handed) in a ladder stand.......there is just no easy way to do that while sitting in a ladder stand (or at least no one has let me in on the secret).

I told the gentleman that I am hunting with that I would try the ladder stand. And that if I were not comfortable with it, that he would need to set up a blind (on the ground) come rifle hunting season. I'm strictly interested in hunting for meat. No interest in a trophy. Though.........

I'm just happy to be out there hunting at all. I have a black bear playing on one of my properties that I nearly kissed he was so close. I want him too!! Grrrrrr..... I clearly need to pick up a less frustrating sport.

Lost a good friend that fell from a tree stand while bow hunting whitetail, no safety harness, believe it or not he was telephone lineman, and no safety harness on while hunting. Dead.

It's sad regardless.... We don't know too many details, other than an older gentleman. Yes, harnesses help, if used right/correctly. However, ladder/ground blinds are much safer.... Not real handy for bow hunters I get. Either way. I'm sorry for this hunter & his loved ones. Nobody wants to think about their dad or grandpa falling, suffering in the woods.... Possibly in pain, agony, ants & shit! It sux! Plain & simple.

When I re-read the original post, I saw it said the TREESTAND fell, not him. Made me recheck the straps on all mine this weekend. All good. So sad when things are preventable.
