I just dropped a Remington 788 off At MagNaPort to have the barrel threaded for a suppressor. My grandson will use it during this years youth hunt.
These “cheap” rifles are amazingly accurate. And now sought after.

Has anyone else experienced ridiculous accuracy with the 788s?
I guess they became too expensive to manufacture. The trigger lock time is said to be amongst the fastest. Adding to accuracy.

Have been going to Mag-na-Port since early 70's when they were on South River Road great people to deal with. Have known the Kelly family and watched Kenny grow up with the business, last time I was in there he was telling me in a few years he will be retiring.

I have found the Remington 788's to be tack driving and ridiculously accurate without post purchase "gunsmithing". I have owned them in .308, 6mm Remington, .223 and in 22-250,all very sweet and nice handling. The only thing I've ever done to the was to have the renown 788 triggersmith Brian Volker of Ryan, Iowa "sweeten" the trigger a bit on the 22-250. Brian is well known for his work on 788 triggers.
@attitudesickness, what caliber are you having ported--just curious. Mag na port, in my opinion is so much a better choice than a brake--definitely less "blast/noise" and recoil and muzzle rise...at least on my 300 WM.

I have two 788’s. I bought a .22/250 in 1979 and a 7mm/08 when it first came out in 1980. I still have them both.
The .22/250 has accounted for hundreds of groundhogs and a number of coyotes. For a long time, it was almost hard to shoot a group larger than a .5”. Now it’s starting to deteriorate, but a good part of that is probably the shooter.
I ordered a 788 in 7mm-08 before it hit the market in 1980. A rep was telling my LGS owner that Remington was revising the 788, making it a carbine in several chamberings and introducing a new round: the 7mm-08. I overheard and told them to order me one and two boxes of ammo. The rifle came in on a Tuesday, mounted a scope on Wednesday, sighted it in on Thursday and hunted an Ohio hunting preserve on Saturday, taking a Barbarossa ram. This rifle has always been a sub 1” shooter. It has since accounted for numerous deer and the 7mm-08 has become one of my favorite rounds.
The late Larry Kelly of Magnaport was one of the guys instrumental in bringing handgun hunting into the mainstream. I met him a couple of times. Nice guy.
