Leopard and lion set-up

I’ve witnessed too many failures of mechanical broadheads to use them on any game animal. Highly recommend tuning up for a high quality fixed blade.

HI
I booked a hunt in Zimbabwe for 2025. Main goal is leopard and lion with bow.
For the ones that already bowhunted the two what was your set-up?
Did anny of you used a mecanical broadhead? What tubes and what poundage are you using?

Most setups lean toward heavy arrows and fixed blades for reliability — mechanicals aren’t usually the first choice for dangerous game. Strong penetration and shot placement are key.

The zambian dream with Steven Rufus or how to get 3 of the dangerous ones with a bow

A mechanical broadhead is never ok for dangerous game.

I won’t even shoot deer with them.

Although lion and leopard with a bow are doable(although I’m not sure Zim is issuing bow permits for DG at the moment) it’s really not the best idea.

I will never use a fixed blade for a cat! My 80 pounds with a 2 inch minimum cut lenght mechanical is the way to do it.

This is total BS... 45 years bowhunting and guiding hunters and watching countless mechanical broadhead failures since they were introduced, where a fixed broadhead would have gotten it done... NO WAY... especially on a critical and expensive cat hunt.

how manny african animals, especially leopards did you hunted/guided? That's the bulshit talking about hunting leopard when the only one you saw was in a zoo.

I think large black bears and grizzlies are a pretty good substitute for the terminal effects of broadheads... and that number is well into the triple digits.

i have killed 3 bears in Alaska with my long bow. They where way easier to kill then the leopard. And yes with a longbow I understand to use a fixed blade. When I go for kodiak I will use mechanics and a 90 pôunds bow. You saw manny mechanic faill because of low poundage

Make sure permits are in order and I'd recommend a 21 day safari to accomplish this. You will need a rifle as you will need to shoot piles of bait for 2 cats.

The post is old. Now I know you can only bowhunt leopard from the big ones in Zimbabwe and only on private land. That's what I will do end of april. MEanwhile I killed two leopards with bow in Zambia last year

No, most of my moose and bears hunters shoot 75 - 85 pound cam bows... they did not fail because of a lack of energy, they failed because of an inferior mechanical design. Not even mechanical head proponents will argue that they are stronger than fized heads. On soft animals with perfect broadside shots you will "likely" be fine, but change that to a quartering angle, or a poor shot striking bone, or the arrow striking a branch and deploying prematurely... that is where the disparity of consistent strength comes into play, sometimes catastrophically. With a backyard deer hunt sure give it a go, but on an African cat hunt??? Why on earth would you not maximize the potential lethality.

Actually I had forgotten that I responded to this thread two years ago... and basically said the same thing... I think you got the arrogant attitude backwards... but sure, you have a great day too... I hope it all goes well for you.

I think the moderator got upset about the big dick contest. And the french conection. This is why he erased our comments. But that’s BS.
We where arguing like old friends
Let’s Hope that end of April I will have one more léopard and some others critèrs that I can show you

More.likely a weak-kneed "hall monitor" type got his panties in a bunch and reported the dialog... that is the problem with the world at the moment, a bunch of weak, easily offended simps patrolling speech.
Oh well, good luck on your hunt, I hope your arrow flies true and your broadhead opens and cuts as it should.

Here’s the setup for my leopard Hoyt RX7 at 70 pounds victory arrow with a grim reaper mech broadhead. I will say not all broadheads are made equal. I have killed a few animals with my grim reapers with no issue. lol

I have used iron wills with a lot of luck on thick skinned animals in africa recently. My leopard didn’t make it 20 steps.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.
