Kudu and Caliber

.375 H&H
300gr. Barnes TSX-FB

My one and only Kudo was taken with a .375 H&H Magnum with an LPVO scope.

My shot was at well over 200M.

If I had to do it again, I would use have used a .30/06, .300 Win Mag, or a .300 WBY Mag (my favorite, for big PG).

5X magnification with a 1" objective, was not what I needed for a long shot with a .375 H&H at dusk.

I killed it, but we couldn't find it until the next morning. Jackals worked it over during the night.

(sorry, I but I didn't take a picture of the hole that the jackals made)

I’ve shot kudu with 308, 300 mag, 375 H&H. I agree with others kudu aren’t particularly difficult to kill, but in areas with thicker brush and less kudu numbers I’m glad I had 375 because shots aren’t always perfect and the penetration helps. Most kudu hunts I’d say 300 mag is perfect.

Used the same Sako rifle in .300 Win Mag for my two Cape Kudu, single shot on each using 200 grain ELDX bullets. I realize not alot of love for these Hornady bullets on this forum, but they worked at 100 yards and over 460 yards very well.

Don't worry what the internet thinks about ELDX. I have taken 8 big game in a row from 50 yards to over 400 yards, 1 shot each on the ribs...dropped straight down without taking another step...eyes closing before they hit the ground. If you understand the design of a bullet, you can make that work for you. We were filming for shows and wanted dead right there, zero tracking kills. Put one behind the shoulder (not on it) and you will get similar results. It's not my fav big game bullet because it has limitations but it kills faster than anything I've seen. Whitetail, mule deer, aoudad, big hogs, etc.

To each his own, but my Hornady bullets have preformed flawlessly...

1 DG animal, 4 other PG animals, and many North American animals.

All with 1-shot kills.

I'm still looking for the problem...

Maybe, I don't hunt enough (90 plus day each year)....

We’ve shot a few with a .270 and 150 grain Nosler Partitions and TTSX’s, they died just fine. Also with .300 Winchester and one with my .416 because it is what I had at that moment. None of the ones shot with bigger guns died any deader than with the .270. Next one I shoot will probably be with my .338, only because it’s probably what I’ll be hunting with. It won’t kill a kudu deader than the .270 does.

Only recommendation is don't undergun, don't underestimate, even kudu. Some bulls are very large and heavy. I've killed 5. One with 30-06 and four with 338-06. Use a good, strong, proven premium bullet. I've never shot one over about 150 yards.

This bull is very large and heavy. Prime condition early in year- April.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
