Ran across this on FB from 1957, 5 shillings was equal to 1 dollar. Courtesy of APHA.

Rhino and giraffe the same price!

That is a very interesting price list. You could do the entire big 5 for $112.

If Kenya would smartly open hunting again they could name their price! It could be a million dollar hunt and people would book up. Just for the nostalgic experience. Imagine hunting the Mara, or Tsavo, or the highlands. One could dream

I put the numbers into an inflation calculator. The big 5 would cost less than $1400 in today’s money.

On a separate note the demise of the Kenyan hunting and its aftermath is seriously depressing. I’ve spent a lot of time in Kenya for work and the wild spaces are not even a shadow of what they were before the hunting ban.

Perfect case study of what happens when you ban hunting in favor of photography only tourism.

In my opinion, Kenya has devastated wild life, by 80% of its former numbers, since the ban in seventies
The animals remain in national parks. The rest of country is cattle and encroachment.
So, if some hunting is reinstated, then for a start if would be possible only on fenced properties similar to South Africa system. But there is also a fresh example - UAE and recent option for hunting Arabian oryx there (which is not possible to hunt anywhere else). So, this model is feasible under positive legislature amendments.
As the animal numbers would grow, animals could be reintroduced elsewhere, as per some reintroduction program. But I dont think it will ever happen. there is no public narrative leading in that direction.

I’m in at those prices.
