During the afternoon hunt on day four we spotted a herd of 13 Gemsbok. After a relatively easy level stalk of 300 yards, we observed the herd for over 15 minutes, but were unable to identify a mature bull. We shortly observed a solo male deeper in valley. We attempted two separate stalks unsuccessfully. Finally, we found him on the fringe of the original herd, lying down, @ 250 yards exposing no vitals. When he stood up, click, I had failed to chamber a round after making my weapon safe after the last failed stalk. I was flustered, chambered a round but rushed the shot- clean miss. Both he and the herd ran off. We were able to relocate the herd and he was still on the fringe. This time we had the wind in our face and a setting sun behind us. The low sun made it impossible for them to see us. I successfully dropped him at 200 yards after 2 ½ hours of stalking.
