John Sharp's New Book Facing Down Fear

Thought I'd put a plug in for John's new book. I had the pleasure of hunting with John a few years ago and he's a real interesting guy. He's had a very interesting life and done quite a few other things, prior to becoming a successful PH. Spoiler Alert: The title, "Facing Down Fear" is not just about hunting DG. There are a few other lessons of life to be learn. The book should be a good read.

I was flying to South Africa on the 15th for meetings.

A co-worker was in the seat next to me and he noticed me paging through "Facing Down Fear". Questions ensued...

After a good bit of discussion related to John's career and experience, my co-worker (who is an avid baseball fan and 62 years old, but NOT a hunter) said that my being able to hunt with a seasoned pro like John was equivalent to him being able to take the field and actually play baseball with Mickey Mantle.

The longer I let that comment/analogy sink in, the more I was floored by it (I am 61 and also was a big fan of Mickey Mantle as a boy).

My co-worker was right. I wasn't just getting to watch a legend do his thing. I wasn't just going to get his autograph.

I was going to have the chance to suit up and take the field with him. I was going to actually join him in doing that thing that has made his career notable.

Ladies and Gents, we are fortunate indeed to have this opportunity! As hunters, we can hunt alongside legends.

They are out there, in every country of Southern Africa. Go find a legend and book a hunt!

A very interesting perspective. Really makes you think, doesn’t it? We are blessed with opportunities that may not be around forever. How many more generations will be able to say they have hunted Africa, let alone having hunted with the “legends of the game”? If we’re smart we will grab onto those opportunities and wrestle ‘em to the ground!

And that is why the analogy floored me so.

Talk about a perishable commodity!

Our inherent normalcy bias keeps us from fully acknowledging the reality that legends aren’t young and won’t be with us forever.

I feel the same way about Johnny Viviar. Met him years ago and finally got to hunt Buffalo with him in 2016. Fantastic hunt and a man with so much knowledge about Buffalo. It was a privilege to hunt with him

great read,impressive man.im now reading a hunters hunter,by robin hurt,very entertaining,be warned,this is a very big and heavy book,you need to rest it on your leg to read it,but well worth the effort.

I have literally read his book three times and enjoy it so very much!!!
