Hydrostatic shock does not help kill animals

A sharp blow to the central nervous system (either brain or spinal cord) immediately incapacitates an animal. This doesn't need to be a direct hit to the cord or brain either. If you want to call the impact "hydrostatic shock" that's probably reasonable.

While it's "knocked out" it often bleeds out, or dies of hypoxia due to a pneumothorax.
The infamous high shoulder shot. The few times I have tried it, the animal wike up before it bleed out. They were paralyzed, but still required a follow up shot.

They don't go far with a hole in both lungs and quicks kills are more reproducable with double lung hits.
 
Shock waves created by a blast causes damage IMO. Consider it similar to a bomb where casualities happen due to the blast waves created, similarly when a bullet hits it transfers energy on the target creating shock waves as it traverses.
 
I spent over 40 years doing surgery and, in those years, took a lot of trauma call including 5 years
in Detroit's 2 busiest trauma Centers. Detroit in the 80's was the murder capital of the world and
the 2 places I took call were #1&3 for volume. I have operated patients with all kinds of penetrating wounds and trust me Hydrostatic tissue disruption can kill you immediately or over several days even with the best surgical care. So, don't give me the BS that Hydrostatic trauma doesn't play a roll.
Shoot a prairie dog with a 223 with FMJ then shoot won that the bullet comes apart dissipating all its energy into tissue damage and tell me hydrostatic injury doesn't kill. Shoot a Cape Buffalo with a solid
and compare the tissue damage to a heavily constructed expanding bullet from the same gun and tell me which has the most tissue damage! The reason why I never use solids on buffalo.
Also, one of the many reason that I really dislike Barnes Bullets. I know there are those who love Barnes
but I suspect it's lack of experience with other bullets in many cases.

I used that example because if you are going try compare the effects of shock alone you need to compare the same caliber, bullet type/performance, weight, etc. A bullet’s job is to transfer energy combined with maximum penetration through vitals that’s why we generally use expanding bullets for hunting. There are a lot more variables to look at than energy (shock) alone. For my particular example you could easily do the math. Energy is 0.5xMassxVelicity Squared. Use the velocity on impact and the velocity on exit. A FMJ takes bullet performance and how they transfer energy differently out of the variables if you want to make it a scientific experiment. For hunting, There’s a reason soft cup and core worked well for years with older slower cartridges but Magnums needed tougher bonded or monolithic bullets. There’s also a reason fragmenting bullets work so well on varmints but not on a buffalo. You’re choosing a bullet that optimizes that energy transfer and tissue damage while getting full penetration through vitals. You need a lot of penetration on a buffalo. You only need a few inches on varmints. You’re choosing choose different bullets for different purposes. The combination of energy, penetration, tissue damage is what kills. You have to make it appropriate for situation.

I love Barnes TSX for buffalo. They are tough and penetration is awesome. That being said they don't create quite as big of a permanent wound channel as many of the bonded bullets do, but they do not leave a small wound channel by any means. I believe the penetration advantage outweighs the minimal wound channel difference. I've seen what they can do when a heavy shoulder joint bone is impacted. They still get through to the vitals and hold together better than most bonded bullets in my opinion.

The bullet is most often recovered from the buffalo. This means that there was 100% of the bullets energy was transferred into the animal.

I never said speed meant nothing. In your 22 caliber example both the faster bullet of the same weight has more energy to begin with. While it may transfer more energy to the target, it will still have little shock value compared to an expanding bullet.

I've never used any of the fragmenting bullets myself so I can't offer any first hand knowledge of their performance. I know through ballistic gel testing that I have seen they seem to create a great deal of wound channel trauma. I feel that for buffalo I want my bullet to stay together and penetrate the vitals even if the wound channel may be 10-20 percent smaller. I know what works for me and I'm sticking with my TSX.

If these are real questions, you might benefit from watching these bullet tests. Type in “Mason Leather 243” on YouTube or 223, 6.5 creedmoor, whatever you’d like. You can see the difference of bullet performance from one bullet to the next. They are all designed to perform differently. I find them really interesting to watch.

Is that do to 'shock' or the bullet coming apart and the 1000's of little pieces each causing their own, little wound channel?

I would wager all of the people shot in Detroit are shot with handguns. Velcoties are slow and weight retention of handgun bullets is near 100%. Especially in the 80s when pistol bullet tech was in the caveman era.

I have never had one get up as long as I was using a round that started at 3000 fps and above
I have had some take awhile to die with slower stuff like handgun rds. To the point of cutting its throat when I got to the deer

I know the answer. I just want to know how people hold the contradicting opinions that shock kills animals, post pic of massive wounds caused by small, fast bullets, but then claim you need a big gun and a tough bullet, which doesn't have shock, to kill animals.

And if you post a buch of gel tests, you will get the 'gel isn't aniamls' crowd all hot and bothered.

Wounding is caused by bullet construction and impact velocity. Which is a simple way of saying the same thing you are saying.
 
As far hydro shock I think it can kill but is not reliable enough to count on for killing.
From what I have seen the 6mm kills better than the 243 little extra speed.
Out of my 44 on deer ( not necessarily on hogs)
The loads that have bloodshot meat seems to kill quicker than the ones that don’t.

The 257 wb is where I have seen some very interesting stuff.
Like stomach and guts busted but the bullets were no where around there
High shoulder shots and neck shots with the extra damage. That was with the 87gr factory load.
It did not happen with each animal but enough that I think there something to it.
 
Hydrostatic Shock kills in dramatic form. The U.S. FBI Protocol addresses hydrostatic shock but lack of hydrostatic shock consistency is an issue. Shotguns kill by hydrostatic shock with multiple pellets hitting the target in different nano-second time intervals overloading the body’s senses to react. The target has to be of a size that can be hydrostatically shocked by a shoulder fired or hand held weapon and impact velocity has to be above 1500 fps at the very least.

We did a side by side on 2 cull deer with neck shots. A 22-250 with a 40 gr vmax and a 30-06 with 180 partitions. The vmax died, the 30-06 took two more rounds in the neck to die. Intial shot placement was almost exactly the same (though small changes can make a big difference on neck shots). Do not recommend.

To start out at 3000 fps I would assume you are using something in the .22 to .25 cal range, or very light for caliber bullets. How far were the shots and what was the impact velocity? Afterall, it is not how you start, it is how you finish. ;)

Wound channels seem to be a zero sum game. You can get long and narrow, or shallow and wide, or something in between. It all depdends on bullet construction and impact velocity.

For dangerous game, giving up a really wide wound for one that you know will get through both lungs seems prudent. Especially when mixing it up at close range in thick brush.

So you turn one knob up, velcoity, with the magnum, but turn one knob down, expansion, with a 'tough' bullet. Why even bother?

These are great expanding bullets that leave a huge wound channel. Thinner skin and lighter bones allow for different approach.

Again this is what works well for me. Everyone has their own preferences.

I like the oryx. I posted my experience with them in the bullet performance database. Norma puts out lots of good videos featuring their products.

Just basing what I saw with speed it really seems that faster seamed to kill better or slower with a 300gr bullet and bigger.
I dont know what the speed would be at around 200yd
I try to limit my hunting to 300yd and the culling to 500 and in ( that’s with the 257 wb mag)
Mosly 6mm rem 80gr federal blue box
And older 80gr rem corlock ( my wife’s perferd load)
Light 25 wssm and 25-06 and the 257wb.
7mm stw
A few 30-378 wb ( that’s a fire breather)
A few guys using 22-250 on culling.
6mm-06 wildcat

The heavier was stuff like the 4570 450m
50-95
And 44 mag with the 270 gr and 300gr loads out of a rifle
 
Whatever you want to call it, 7 mags flatten animals more than any rifle I have seen in 30 years of hunting. I don’t know the science behind it but I know it’s true, that being said- I do shoot Barnes.

That might be an accurate statement comparing lead core to a monolithic for hunting whitetail deer, but that’s not an accurate statement for broader hunting.
