Hunting Vaal Rhebok

seattlesetters,

The Vaal rhebok is a great trophy offering long shots in as others have said often very windy conditions. You need an excellent range finder and know exactly where your rifle shoots out to about 400 yards. You find them on open hillsides and they've got you pegged way before you see them. If I did it again I'd treat it as I would a sheep hunt and bring a rifle dedicated to the Vaalie hunt and a spotting scope. Their little needle like horns are very hard to see and if you are looking for a good one you'll need to see that 4"-5" above the tops of the ears.

I hunted the rhebok in the Natal Midlands and close by you could hunt common and mountain reed buck plus Cape bushbuck and common duiker all free range. Add a nyala to that and you'd have a great 10 day safari for some really cool animals.

Thanks, Mark. And I have just the rifle.....

Since nyala and bushbuck are at the very top of my wish list, the thought of a safari for the species you listed has crossed my mind. I'd probably make it 14 days, though, and add warthog.

seattlesetters,

I'm sure a warthog would be no problem. If you are interested in a quote let me know. It would take one change of area but I think you'd be very happy with 14 days in this area.

Vaalie's rock!! They are great again and are certainly a special little antelope.
I will definitely hunt them again.

I hunted the vaal rhebok in the Marius Goosen area and I can tell you that it is a very tough hunt: in order to achieve this wonderful specimen I had to make the longest shot ever made, 420 meters so far! One of the most memorable and exciting hunts ever tried

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
