Tell me about hunting in the mountains of RSA. Vaal Rhebuck, cape mountain zebra, aoudad? What was it like? How was the challenge?

Hunting a Hartman in their native range in the central mountains of Namibia can be one of the great African hunts.

Hartmann Zebra and Cape Mtn Zebra is not the same thing. He will be hunting a Cape Mtn Zebra in their native range.

If you walk/hike after a Vaalie you will have an incredible challenge.
Waiting at the lucerne, not so much.
It can be quite similar to a cross between Pronghorn and Bighorn sheep hunting.
If you really want to step it up, grab your bow and sneak up on them.
You gotta be able to shoot and manage the mountains.

Yes I know. Anything incorrect about what I posted? If hunting a Cape mountain zebra is remotely similar it will be a great experience.

Nothing incorrect, but he asked about hunting in RSA.

I am not that familiar with the areas. I imagined the terrain in RSA will be like where you were at in Spain?

I have never hunted the Eastern Cape. Everyone says it is beautiful. I would be prepared to reach out just a bit.

Trying to work within range of a Hartman in the Erongo Mountains of Namibia was very challenging. If a hunt for a cape mountain zebra is anything like that, you will find it a great experience.

Hunting Aoudad anywhere you can find them is very challenging, took me three days to shoot one in the Northern Cape.

They are a great game animal. The free range herds in the mountains of West Texas offer a tremendous challenge and hunting experience. I have no doubt they are equally so in the Northern Cape.

I hunted in the Karoo near Graaff-Reinet in March this year. We saw maybe 5-8 Vaal Rhebok everyday while hunting other animals. My report is posted on here, I put a lot of landscape pictures if you want to take a look. The vastness of the area was really unique.

I had a great time hunting my Rhebuck last year. The mountains were beautiful. Loved all of the flowers blooming. We were 8 plus miles on the day I got mine. Cool animal. I got to see perhaps 100 different Vaalies over the course of 4 days or so. Their eyes are good!! Be in good shape for some hiking. That hant can be as hard as you want it to be.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.
