Hunting EC Karoo in June, how much of a jacket am I going to need on those long rides in the am? I remember being pretty cold in Limpopo in 2007 in the back of the truck, is a puffy the answer? Looking for suggestions- don’t own a puffy, seems like it would get shredded

thanks

I used an old Cabelas thinsulate lined jacket and it was warm enough and the cloth exterior did not get damaged.

Layering works and I have learned to incorporate that concept into cold weather Africa. My first trip was very cold at below freezing late night to early morning then very warm afternoon. I've settled on something like an insulated canvas jacket outer layer. Carhartt is known for the type and that design works well. Then a vest then a shirt. I use stuff that is snag resistant and doesn't pick up debris- jacket, vest, shirt, pants... add gaiters, gloves and decent hat. Nothing fancy.

Dont take one coat.

Take 3 shirts. One long sleeve (insulated) base layer, one long sleeve (mid weight) second layer, and one long sleeved (wind/water) outer layer. You can use all three, or any combo as needed. Carry them in your pack and add/subtract change as needed as the temps and weather change thought the day.

In Namibia in Sep we still had cold mornings. I had my button up shirt that I wore all day. A thick fleece pullover over that and a zip up polartec over that. My light wind jacket would have been a good idea over those if it were any colder but what I should have had was a stocking cap. Next time I'll pack one.

In short, I layered with stuff I could walk through brush in and would also breathe.

If you booked at Tallyho we would give you a fleece jacket no need to bring anything more
