Does anyone know what type of powder Hornady uses in their .450/400 DG factory loads, or is that a trade secret? Looking to develope some loads for my VC double in that caliber, and seeing as how it was regulated at the factory with Hornady ammo, I thought that using the same powder would be a good place to start.

You'll probably never know.
Manufacturers cultivate their secrets
Experience shows that powder is not available.

I took one Hornady 450-400 3" 400 gr. SN ( not bonded) bullet factory load apart, and it was charged with 80.3 gr. of a powder that "looked" like H1000 or H4831. That's about all I can tell you.

No clue on the DG ammo but a friend called to see what powder was in their Superformance Creedmoor ammo and was told it was a proprietary blend.

dougfinn,

i have a 450-400 as well. i chrono-graphed my hornady loads and got 2100 fps out of my 25.5" barrel.

i hand loaded a duplicate speed load with imr 4831.

my load is 76 gr. of imr 4831 with a 400 gr. north forks softs/solids. there are other excellent bullets out there, that was just my choice. of course start at a lower weight of powder and work your way up until your bullets converge, then check the velocity if you can.

good luck on your project.

I have worked up 400 gr swift A-frames and nortfork cps with AA4350 for my VC double.

I duplicate the Hornady factory load velocity with 78 grains of IMR 4831 in Hornady case and a Fed 215 primer...Hornady DGX of course!

My practice load is now 81gr of the same powder, as I find the factory loads a little "light".

Edit: Just recalled that you are shooting a double...so I am not recommending the 81gr load for your rifle...I am shooting a Ruger No. 1 and have a little more flexibility!

I think you will fine the 78gr load very close to factory velocity. It is within 25 fps in my rifle.

most factory loads use proprietary blends, often mixes of powders we do have, we just don't know the mixture. I would just pick a powder you like and try to replicate the muzzle velocity.

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc

Good morning John, I just read your setup procedure for the northstar duplicator ator. I found it very hand and I did learn some things. I have the same machine and I am having a problem i can not figure out and was hoping you could shed some light on the subject.
