I recently bought at auction a Heym 88b in .375 H&H. It was sold as a sideplated boxlock but when it arrived yesterday I found that it is as I suspected actually a sidelock action.

Its has 25 inch barrels, and is about 8.5 lbs without the scope. Claw mounted Zeiss 1.5-4.5 scope. The length of pull is about 1/2 an inch longer than ideal for me, which can be remedied. Also the front sight is a partridge style blade rather than a bead, which I may also change.

The scope seems decent, but the claw mount base positions will work well for a Z6i or similar if I want to upgrade it. I do think I’ll get a red dot mounted to fit the claw mounts too.

There are plenty of marks on the stock that show it has been hunted with quite a bit. But it has been very well looked after.

I think I’ll get lots of use out of this rifle, plus it cost me way less than it should have!

That looks and sounds great. For sure it justifies a better scope.

Was that the one in the Holts sale? I was seriously tempted. The double rifles in their sales go for next to nothing sometimes!

Very nice double, congratulations! What made you think it was a sidelock and not a sideplated boxlock?

Most of my hunts are solo — just me, my rifle, and a good map. Sometimes I tag along with an old buddy for a week in Zimbabwe or South Africa, but more often than not, it’s just me.
Big fan of classic hunting — bolt-action rifles, old-school tracking, and taking the time to really be in the moment.
Just did a podcast, check it out if interested!
